Sorry to spam, but, following on from my printer q, work have offered a 6 year old desktop for the new surgery. It does not have wireless/wifi but our IT department says the cards are easy to fit. are they?? how would i know the correct card to buy?

Thanks so much for this

The USB WiFi sticks work much better than internal cards in my experience.

ETA - I have this one and it works very well - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06XZ5B5G9

Yeah, just buy a USB wifi dongle, rather than an internal wireless card ...

ETA: I use a USB wifi dongle on my desktop with no issues. I'm a high usage user too; regular uploads to a YouTube channel etc.

Not wishing to sound too alarmist but if this PC that you're setting up for the surgery will be having patient records stored in it then please make sure it's running decent protection software and also be aware that there are certain legal requirements around the storage and processing of people's personal data.
Also make sure you have a backup solution as hard drives do fail and I'm sure you won't want to be losing all the data!

she is connecting to a server ran by a service provider on behalf of the medical council which stores data centrally and not locally on the PC. hence the wifi q. but thank you a very good observation

Is there really no spare Ethernet socket nearby (or even a lengthy cable run) that you can connect to? I’m assuming this is a modern surgery?

I asked that and got a resounding 'get your head out of the 90's'... so its a shared practice and they dont want to have cables everywhere. it will be 'white' and 'minimalist'.

Check the wifi plays nicely with any microwave that you may have in a kitchen area or similar.

white, minimalist and they can't manage to buy iMacs?

lease overheads etc. the PC equipment is seen as a short term measure until they are on their feet
