Hi all,

Does anyone have any experiences with USB microscopes, as with everything else there are thousands of them to choose from, some look like toys and some look quite professional (probably with toy internals) and vary hugely in price.

For example...a quick look on Amazon brought these two up.

Dino-lite scopes are at the expensive end of the market, this mid range one is £360 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dino-Lite-AM4113ZTL-USB-M...

And this one...it has big specs but for £19 what will you get - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Microscope-Bysameyee-40X-...

I want to use one to check solder joints and tracks on small PCB's, so something with good lighting and decent image quality would be a priority, on screen measurement as well.

Depends on what you want it for tbh.

I have both the cheap one you linked (or copy of) and an optical traditional microscope.

The cheapo is fine, and you'll see tiny insects etc, but the mag ratings are made up. It works at the lower end of the scale. Picture resolution is low too, but plenty for messing about.

The expensive one looks like a con.

I've got one of the cheap handheld one's and it's basically a toy.

I'm tempted to try one of the one's with a screen, will buy from Amazon so I can send it back if it's no good.

Something like this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08G4Y6C65/ref=sspa_dk...

However, I suspect the camera itself will not be that much better than a handheld one .... still returning to Amazon is hassle free.

I doubt if you will get on-screen measuring unless you go for an industrial one (££££).

A solution was literarily under my nose, I have a Modius Dashcam fitted with a 6-22mm lens which was used for experimenting with lens magnification.

So I set it up on a tripod connected to a computer and old HD 32" TV running the Microsoft Camera app...it all worked superbly the images are nice and crisp, all I need now is to buy one of the adjustable stands for the camera and I'am good to go.
