After some 27 years IE ends later today

https://www.tomsguide.com/uk/news/internet-explore...

As Dr Who once said "It's the end, but the moment has been prepared for" and I stopped using it yonks ago
I started with Edge whenever that came out and now use a mix of Edge, Chrome (yes I know about Edge being a Chrome fork/clone) and Firefox
I don't personally know anyone who does use ie now but I used to and it became almost a part of the furniture for maybe 10 years. It was bundled in with Windows Installs then if my memory is correct MS had to offer alternatives so it was'nt as automatic as it had been.

Yep. It's awful, painful slow journey is done.

We stopped supporting it well over a year ago on the basis that almost all its users are stuck in corporations with impenetrable IT policies. But those people would almost certainly have another device they could access the sites on anyway if they wanted to.

If you *need* IE for technical debt reasons you can run those webpages in Edge in compatibility mode. I know this because where I work we've done that for all the stuff that keeps the business afloat*

  • Should just be deleted.

Funnily enough I just popped it into search and whereas an hour or so ago I could get the app it now diverts to Edge
I was thinking that there would probably be an uninstall option on the app but as the app has now gone

R.I.P I.E, at least I'll always have the memories of using it to immediately download a better browser.

It won't realise it's dead for a while yet.

Now all we need is for Apple to send a fraction of their enormous wealth towards bringing Safari into this decade (which, to be fair, they are finally starting to do). Once that's done we'll be truly in the modern browser age.

And while they're at it, allow some other browsers on Apple devices

This is a brilliant visualisation of the browser market:

I'm using Safari right now. Parts of it aren't great, but its privacy settings are the best out there.

Not sure why you say that you can't have other browsers though? I've got Chrome on my Mac, on my iPad, and on my iPhone. Firefox is also available for Mac & iOS devices.

Hurrah! I must have spent literally weeks of my life over the last 30 years writing IE specific code for various bits of software because IE wasn't standards compliant.

Recently I've noticed that Edge became my default browser again on Windows 11, thought this wasn't allowed due to the anti trust case a while back.

Microsoft have a real issue on their hands as the younger generation only use Windows as they are forced to at school whereas their own personal devices will be Macs.

Half of all gamers still use PCs at least part of the time. So I wouldn't say their only exposure would be school.

I just checked that a legacy build script at work still works.

Luckily, it does!

Only useful thing about Edge is the searches you can do for reward points, a few minutes a day and I ended up with enough to get an Xbox Controller and Game Pass

In a similar fashion, I’m sure the most searched term on Bing is ’Google’
