Started at 6. iPhone and iOS 16 stuff so far, customisable lock screen with widgets, sharing between apps. "Dictation' speech to text messages and emails now.

Carplay is going to take over digital instrument displays with Apple instruments.

I know, that seems a bit scary really. Keep the car controls separate and the phone to maps and media.

iOS 16 needs iPhone 8 or later. No surprise dropping the 6s and 1st gen SE but no support this year for iPhone 7 is a bit surprising. I wonder if they will keep security updates going for iOS 15 for a bit, like they did for 12. I really wish Apple would be more clear about how long devices are supported for and when updates have actually stopped.

It’s always about 6 years isn’t it? Decent enough if you ask me.

About that but it isn’t consistent. Fair enough they don’t know when launching a model what new versions of the OS might need 4+ years out but a simple policy of at least 3 years after it goes off sale of security updates would be nice. You could buy an iPhone SE or 7 brand new up until 2019.

I’m 50/50 most car companies skimp when it comes to designing software and there’s some truly st ones about, outsourcing it to a giant software developer makes sense for improved displays.

I agree but it’s just so ‘Apple’ in design. I get enough of that as it is. I know it’s customisable but does anyone really need all the info displayed? Calendars and weather forecasts…

Maybe I can get something to my taste from the App Store hehe

What would be much better is being able to add stops on an iPhone or CarPlay without having to import through a Mac or ask Siri. I’m very pro apple and I prefer apple maps instructions but some things they’re just behind the curve by years.

I have seen complaints in n reviews that cars with digital cockpit only show manufacturer's satnav.

And Google maps from Android Auto or carplay can't be displayed there, only on the central displays... So I think being able to do that would be an advantage.

The full width screen on their demo dashboard is not that far away from a Honda E dash, and Honda are one of the brand's on board with it. 2023 model software?

Maybe this is their way of making an 'Apple Car', making the screen interface on existing new cars their own, instead of making a whole new car themselves.

I like CarPlay, in fact it’s a essential for any of my cars to have it now. But it’s far from automotive grade stable and breaks/crashes in unique and exciting ways on both my cars. It will be years and years before this becomes an easily selectable option in a wide range of cars.

I suppose an iPlank is something coming to all cars and we'll be looking at the same view whether driving a Nissan or a Jaguar, which is a bit depressing.

And on the flip side I’ve never had CarPlay crash. I have had waze occasionally wobble but that’s upon loading it.

The factory UI on new Renault, Polestar and Volvo touchscreens (maybe some others too) is Google, and they are in with the first to go with the Apple UI system that works from the driver's iPhone being connected. The next Android Auto goes still just goes as far as a car's centre screen, they might be pushing manufacturers now to have their own version of this that takes over all the screens and replaces them with a UI similar to Polestar/Volvo/Renault.

The Carplay system must need access to the car through the USB port to work, so the new cars it will work with might have the OBD port through USB or something. There are a few things now that can access car systems, like Carly, but they work through an OBD dongle.

Android Auto/Car Play etc is a great concept, but it's seriously held back by the execution and manufacturers implementing it as cheaply as possible and then trying to integrate their own bullst software with it.

I literally never use anything but Android Auto, yet when I turn off my engine AA is turned off on the display, which causes the bullst own-brand software to think, "Oh wait he's stopped and turned the engine off, he probably wants to listen to some random DAB at full volume now." Then that thing turns itself off when you open the door. So now you have to turn off the car and open the door at the same time FFS.

I've had issues with the system crashing or locking onto my wife's phone only, that were only resolvable by resetting the entire thing back to factory, so it's inevitable that Google will do something within the life-time of the car that causes it to stop working unintentionally.

So I actually think that this is a good idea because Apple/Google taking responsibility for all the bullst manufacturers try to do on the screens as well gets rid of that awkward crappy over-lap and it'll be done much much better. In my case they've screwed the whole thing up because they want to over-lay the fking fan speed over the top of AA when you change it. I know from the position of the knob what the fan speed is FFS.

Sounds like multiple stops are being added to Maps in 16 as well.

How about people just concentrate on driving the fken car instead of having a giant iPad with various distracting things on it?

I swear when people moan about the lack of basic CarPlay and not being able to have WhatsApp or Teams on the go I'm left wondering what is so god damn important that can't be dealt with when you next stop? If it truly is important then it would be a phone call.
