My wife has just bought a new Samsung S8 tablet and it appears it doesn't come with a charger.

Samsung say it's because people are reusing old chargers. We have Samsung's superfast charges that come with precious phones and tablets, and it's taking all night to charge on those.

She bought another (non Samsung) "fast charger" and that also takes ages to charge. She borrowed my daughters apple laptop charger and it charges fine so it looks like we need to buy a specific type of fast charger.

Samsung want £50 for their fast charger, so does anyone know an alternative that isn't so pricy?

Personally I think it's ridiculous that a £600 tablet doesn't come with a charger, and I wanted her to send it back as not fit for purpose!

You need a fast charger than can supply 45w and connect using USB C.

Something like this, smidge over £20:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Spigen-ArcStation-Charger...

or this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B087S3HZ3P/ref=vp_d_pb...

Official Samsung one is £42.99 from Amazon:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Official-Super-Ch...

My goto brand Anker, £40 from Amazon:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Anker-Charger-Adapter-Pow...

I’ve experimented with various chargers in the past and you definitely get what you pay for.

My home is dotted with Anker multiport chargers and they are very reliable, but they aren’t cheap, especially their GaN chargers.

Having a multiport charger, taking up one wall socket, with a selection of charging cables in every room is much more convenient than using single chargers, taking up 3 sockets for 3 devices etc. I never use the boxed manufacturers ones and I’m glad they stopped bundling them.

Thanks. We have Anker power banks so I'll probably get one of their chargers.

For people like us who don't have spare chargers it's a pain when they're not bundled especially when you're spending a lot of money.

Thanks, the problem is we need something in the next few days as it's a pain for two people to be sharing a single charger.

I'll get her to check, however it charges fine with an apple fast charger, plus Samsung warns you that it will be slow on it's older chargers (even though they justify not giving you one because people reuse chargers)

Edited to add...

Checked and it does have fast charging turned on by default.

I'm struggling to find anything from Samsung that tells me what charger I should actually be using. The manual just tells you to use the proper charger or you may damage it, and that you must use the supplied cable.

I do get that, but for every person that doesn't already have a compatible charger, there will be ten who have several; I have them coming out of my ears and have an annual clear-out of all the ones I don't use any more. Electronic waste is a real and increasing problem so I'm all for companies not supplying endless chargers and cables that most of us don't need.

And if you get a decent third-party charger now, you won't mind so much when the next phone you buy doesn't come with one thumbup

I'd be willing to be that most people don't have a spare super fast charger that will work with a tablet, especially if they don't get supplied wirh the devices in tue first place. We have multiple samsung phones and tablets and none of them can charge it at a reasonable rate.

I might be old fashioned, but I think an expensive piece of consumer kit should come with a means to power it.

I have chargers that came with a Galaxy Note 9, S20fe, S20+ and something else that will charge my S8 Ultra very quickly. I don't know what wattage, but it's much quicker to charge than I expected and doens't match your experience at all. Perhaps you have a faulty battery?

Most of my rooms at home now have usb ports built in to the plug sockets. I am pretty sure they are fast chargers 2.4amps or more I think. Although that could be 2.4amps at 5volts, in which case, not so fast hehe. Charges everything fine though. S9 in less than an hour.

.

Those chargers would be compatible with the S8. We have the normal Samsung Adaptive fast charges which charge everything else we have quickly, but not the S8 tablet.

I don't think it's the battery. It charges fine on an Apple charger

You'll need a USB C PD charger to charge it properly - it's got an 8000mAh cell and the old 10w USB A 3.0 QC (Quick Charge) standard will take forever to charge it as you're finding out.
I feel your pain, I bought a top spec Sony phone three or so years ago that was PD compliant, feckin 5w charger supplied in the box that took almost overnight to charge and I had to fork out for a PD charger (and the phone ended up being returned due to a faulty screen...)
Any decent 45w+ PD charger will charge it to it's full capabilities, Belkin or Anker would be my preference.

I'd second Anker kit. I've had all kinds of stuff from them and it's all been great. Manufacturers are now aware of the perception of them adding massively to e-waste and also realised that they can still charge the same for the tablet/phone without a charger. If you get a decent USB-C PD charger then it'll last for years. I'd stump up a little more for a dual port charger as I guess you'll have more than 1 device to charge.

A 45w genuine Samsung charger with usb-c cable is less than £20 delivered with next day delivery (though perhaps not with the long bank holiday)

https://www.samsung.com/uk/mobile-accessories/trav...

Bear in mind that the faster you charge a device the quicker the battery will degrade so if you don't have a timeframe then using a 15w charger will be kinder to the battery.

If wanting a future proof charger for the next few years get a gallium nitride (GaN) charger as the form factor is a lot smaller, I've got a 65w Anker Nano charger and it charges my work Dell laptop fine and is a fraction of the size of the Dell charger, was £30 on Amazon irrc.

Cheers. Looks like they are 50% off at the moment. Will order one.

If you’ve got chargers which seem especially slow, but they shouldn’t be, it’s worthy trying a different lead. They’re not all up to the same standard even though it’s easy to think they’re identical. Some new devices seem a bit picky when it comes to cable / brick combos.

Yes we've had that in the past. It makes no difference what cable or charger we use (other then the Apple one), and Samsung say it will be slow if you're not using the right charger.

A phone or a tablet costing £1k ought have a charger in the box supplied. Samsung will happily sell you an expensive charger, it's a case of heads we win, tails you lose.
I recently bought an OPPO Find X5 Pro, new 80w fast charger & Type C cable in the box.

Guess you won't be needing the Samsung one then, so why pay for it? If they did bundle one in with the pad then it would be more expensive. These things are not 'free'.
