I've got an old laptop with Windows XP that I use to set-up my Megajolt ignition. It used to work ok but I had to do a factory re-set on it and now it wont install the driver from the USB to serial adaptor The adaptor installs on my desktop so I suspect its something to do with the auto hardware install on the XP. Are there any settings I can adjust? I want to install Adobe but that won't work either.

Windows XP has been un-supported for over 8 years. You need to update the OS!!

Do you have a driver or did it just auto install last time? It won’t be able to fetch drivers from windows update any more as the old encryption types won’t work. You could find a new dongle that has downloadable drivers for xp they won’t be expensive.

You’ll need to find an old version of the offline installer for adobe reader.

Download the driver and install manually.

Settings, device manager, find the faulty one, update driver, have disk, choose USB etc. choose driver

What is the actual device?

Also can you not bung Windows 7 on the device, it's still updating?

What's the spec of the device?

There are a number of programmes that are no longer available & won't run on later Windows versions. It's not unknown to have PCs with Windows NT on them & even Windows 95 in one instance. One company was buying up NT licences from ebay to keep them running.

One of the rare occasions where the title of the post is the answer.

I haven’t got the driver as it auto installed last time and still does so on my desktop. It doesn’t have a manufacturer on the dongle so can’t download one. I could buy another one but would rather not.

I can’t find a website with drivers on.

The device is a USB to serial adaptor.

Where can I get a copy of Windows 7?

If you look in Device Manager it will be showing (you may need to turn on Show Hidden Devices) possibly as an unknown device. Then look at the details tab and select Hardware IDs from the drop down list. Copy and paste the HWID into Google and you may find a driver.

Chances are it’s a ft232 converter chip. Possibly a CH340.
Search for and install XP drivers for each then point device manager at each - one should be acceptable.

Device Manager says its this. Searching for drivers doesn't find anything.

I did what you said and without knowing what I was doing seem to have installed a driver and it recognises the adaptor. I'll try connecting it to the car tomorrow and see if it works.

Thanks everyone for your help.

You probably need to install a virtual com port as well.
This should appear in device manager under Ports when the interface is plugged in.
It should be part of the installer package

It looks like its already done it as part of adding the driver. A USB Serial Port is listed in Ports (COM & LPT). I'll see tomorrow when I try it.

EBAY. I can see a product key for £4 and and install disk for £10.
