So it was my birthday recently and my other half bought me some smart glasses

Namely the Ray-Ban Stories Smart Sunglasses

These are Wayfarer style and with Transition lenses (light to dark etc)

I am seriously shocked about how good they are !

Features : Dual cameras, music and voice streaming, voice mics for calls, Bluetooth comms with phone

Pros : Light, Good battery, great features, great lenses, charging case

Cons : In partnership with Facebook so I guess I'm now a walking Facebook camera as have to have another FB app on my phone

I was very wary of them to start with, but so far very impressed. The returns is 45 days so I'll give them a go in Spain next week and see if I still like them

I have a feeling that I will ... other than now getting targeted FB ads from whatever I look at

I don't wear prescription glasses, but I saw on the Ray Ban site that they can be fitted ... might be of interest to some on here !

I am unsure about this type of tech.

Do people look at you strangely when you are talking to them?

How do people feel about you covertly filming them when they find out? (Assuming you’ve told anyone yet!)

Make sure you wear them while giving the Mrs a good seeing to. Be sure to post the resulting footage on here so that we can pass judgement.

Have you seen the price of non smart prescription sunglasses?

Then add Rayban and smart, and I'm surprised they aren't more expensive

I'm actually surprised they are 'only' £300 for the regular ones.

As to prescription sunglasses - I assume Zenni is considered cheating ? (this included duty)

(nothing special about the prescription sunglasses - they came in as $57.01 post a few discount codes)

My last pair of prescription glasses were over £500. Varifocals, lens thinning and the various coatings soon add up.

Yep I’m at that point now. Like you say, thinner lenses, vari focal with reactive lenses. Your getting to £500 a pair. Then you need a spare set in case they get lost or damaged so your getting to a really expensive outlay.

I’m seriously considering laser eye surgery, if it fixed my vision for even 10 years I reckon it would be well worth it just for the fact I don’t have to fk about with glasses.

Why would anyone be willing to pay for sunglasses that serve you adverts?!?

I must be out of touch, my last varifocals were less than £300. I get them reglazed every few years when my prescription changes.

I actually returned my last pair of glasses, as my eyesight was no better with them than the previous pair. Turned out I had cataracts, so as part of the (private) surgery I was given the opportunity to uplift to corrective lenses, which I did. Cost me about £3k on top of the fee paid by my healthcare insurance, so a similar price to just getting the lenses at a high street store.

This is the bit that worries me.

I'll use them in Spain next week and make a point of a) looking/studying obscure things and also make a point of b) photo'ing different obscure things.

If I start getting stuff in FB from either a or b then I'll be seriously thinking to return them .. If I start getting a&b then I'm out and they go back

See my other post re this FB stuff

That said though they genuinely are rather good as a product, and without prescription I don't think that 300£ is a particularly silly price

I’m in the RAF, i was flying for the last 7 years so they wouldn’t let me have it done. Now i am no longer flying I can have it done with a 6 month review post surgery. If it were to mess up my vision i would be out on my ass, I’m lucky I’ve done 25 years service so i only have5 years left, actually 4 in reality as i have a 6 month deployment starting in a few weeks and you don’t really do much in your last 6 months if your smart with leave.

I think when i get back at the end of the year I’m seriously going to do some research and look at getting it done. Ive no idea on costs but I’m currently paying nearly £1k every 2 years if you include contact lenses and a couple of pairs of glasses, maybe £1200. I used to get my contacts for free for flying but that’s no longer the case.

Just need to research who and what i want to do.

I through glasses were always £29.99 a pair, right up until the point you actually buy them. Then the cost about 300 a pair?

I have Ray Ban Clubmasters with reactolite prescription lenses. Cost me £160 last July from Shadestation. I've just enquired about replacing with a changed prescription, £115.

I like the idea of smart glasses, but the Facebook tie in? Not a chance. And not a chance at that stupid money.
