I was recently moved onto Digital Voice with my BT FTTP connection.

I am now at the end of my current contract - But finding an alternative that can provide FTTP and 'Digital Voice' alternative is proving challenging

Does anybody Have any recommendations?

ZEN is a possibility, they provide FTTP and a VOIP number.

Can i move my UK Number to a VOIP Provider?

Sky is the another one supplying FTTP and VOIP. I haven’t used them but the mother in law does and has no complaints.

I don’t think there is any issue moving the number

I have digital voice with Zen, which was activated this week. I was already with Zen for FTTC and landline, then changed to FTTP and digital voice. They ported my existing landline number a couple of weeks after FTTP went live.

Is there any particular reason for looking at alternative suppliers or is it just cost? Interested in how it has performed, did you have any power cuts causing issues, etc.

Its time for a renewal - I always look!

I've always had small providers before (IDNET, Xilo now called UNO, Plusnet when it was small) i only moved to BT because they were the only ones offering FTTP - my contact is due again so I'm shopping about; Digital voice seems to be a real stumbling block, not many people offer an easy alternative!

When I got FTTP I ported my number to Sipgate and set it up with Grandstream hardware. I’m having some audio issues so can’t say it works perfectly yet! Although it does work with the Grandstream iOS app.

A query for all those on BT Full Fibre. BT have sent me a couple of digital home phone's to use for a pending install. Does anyone know if I can use any of my current DECT phones as well ? I've got a set of these: https://shop.bt.com/products/bt-advanced-phone---f...

Excellent thanks ! Trying to find an answer to that on the BT forum wasn't proving easy.

I've been investigating FTTP (full fibre, not pseudo fibre) and VOIP (including BT's Digital Voice) since OpenReach strung fibre cables along the poles down our lane.

BT's charges for calls on Digital Voice are very expensive compared to other VOIP suppliers. It's difficult getting the full charging structure from BT but the call charges for DV (22.84 pence/minute) appear to be the similar to ordinary landline charges.

For example two VOIP providers:
  • Sipgate Basic - calls to UK landline 1.18 p/min and UK mobile 9.90 p/min
  • Localphone - calls to UK landline 0.6 p/min and UK mobile 1.8 p/min
I'm with PlusNet which has just launched a version of FTTP to exiting customers but there are issues relating to the porting of landline numbers. I had to cancel my order as I would lose my number. When they announce FTTP for new customers the landline number issue should go away, I hope.

It should be interesting what PlusNet do with DV as their Hub Two is a rebadged version of the latest BT Smart Hub, except the phone socket has a label on (Digital Voice customers Only).

You all realise you can port your existing numbers over to a voip provider at any time?

You can buy a voip phone adapter to connect your existing phone to your router.

If your isp allows you can then cancel your phone line and keep your broadband only or change to fttp without being tied to the isp for a digital voip line.

I use voipfone for our voip lines, not the cheapest but a U.K. based company, obviously other providers are available.

I’ve got a Grandstream ATA (one off £40ish) to connect a standard dect phone and a sipgate basic account. Costs pennies a month as I generally don’t make calls but having a landline number is handy sometimes.

Sorry I haven't looked here for a few days.

There is a potential problem with porting your number from PlusNet (possibly other ISPs as well) if you have ADSL or FTTC which uses copper wire landlines. Porting the number to a VOIP provider will effectively terminate your internet connection that the ISP uses the phone number to identify your line and can give rise to large termination fees.

I must admit I haven’t had that issue but wouldn’t discount the ability of some isps to screw things up…

As always you’d need to make sure they understand your requirements when you ask for changes

I did say in my post you need to check your isp allows a addl/vdsl line without a phone line. Or if they will allow to transfer out the existing number for voip use and allocate a new one without extending contracts if the plan is to move to fttp in the near term.

I did have a look at that, but works out roughly the same as BT Voice

Really, is it possible you looked at a different headline price? what are BT’s charges compared to these?
