I work for an M&E contractor and we are just transitioning from Autocad to REVIT. We have the software and will be going on a training course but not for a good few months so i was looking to get started and learn the basics.

Looking on youtube etc. tutorials seem to be about drawing the architectural elements, whereas we will already have the model and will be adding MEP services. Does anyone know of any good tutorials that focus on MEP (Electrical if possible). Also looking for info. on where to download models and MEP Families to use for practice.

Thanks

I've been using Revit for structures for the last 8 years or so, I've dabbled in MEP in it, but not spent much time becoming an expert. YouTube is a good resource for training, I have watched a few videos from 'Balkan Architect' which as you can imagine is mostly architectural / structural stuff, but it is a really good channel and would be a good place to start to learn the basics of the software.

Get to grips with the basics - setting up your working views, 3D model views, worksets, sections etc. then have a play around with the MEP tools. From what I remember, a lot of the MEP elements need to be hosted on existing elements. For example, you have to place radiators on walls, you can't have them just floating. So you may need to be hanging cable trays from ceilings or floors, but a more precise MEP tutorial will explain that.

There should be plenty of MEP families in the software already, maybe not the exact ones you are after but enough to get started. Look under the Systems tab to get started, if you are not prompted to load a family, look under the Insert tab for 'Load Family'. It should default to the right place but if not, my default location is C:\ProgramData\AutoDesk\RVT 2021\Libraries then just pick what library suits you best. I use the UK library.

I hope that is of some help. There is quite a lot of help out there on Google, if can ask the right question...

I have been using Revit for a few years now on MEP projects. I'm self-taught after many years using Autocad.
That said, I don't use the software to it's full potential, I've never used the analytical tools for example.

The software was very architectural orientated, the MEP side seemed to be a poor add on in earlier versions though it's improved in the latter version.

Youtube is useful, you can find tutorials for MEP if you search for specific tasks. Electrical power: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzcanbTr-4k
I also have a book "Mastering Autodesk Revit" which is a good reference guide and tutorial if you want to work though the sections.

I think there are some basic models included with the software to practice with and with regard to families,
I find the best ones are provided direct by the manufacturers, There are plenty of websites that provide more generic familes
like nationalbimlibrary.com and bimstore.co. if you give up your email etc and register with them.

It's well worth learning how to create and alter familes as they never seem to be exactly what you want.
ie. a power socket may look great as a 3D model but the 2D graphics in plan view may not be as per your standard symbols etc.
