Hi everyone

Mum has just callled and advised that the emails from all of her folders are missing. She has a gmail address, and uses Apple Mail on her Mac and iPhone. She logged into gmail directly, and sure enough all of the folders are present, but no emails. Inbox just holds emails since a couple of days ago.

I’ve checked archive, deleted, span etc, but they are not there. This is crazy, 1000’s of emails missing. Mum isn’t one to play around with anything, as very cautious and alert. Some emails are extremely important.

As I say, the folders are still present, but empty.

Can anyone point in the right direction please - we cannot simply contact support for help it seems?

Very much appreciated.

What about the All Mail folder? I think the other folders are basically labels for the messages stored in the All Mail folder.

Open an incognito/private browsing window in a desktop browser, go to mail.google.com and sign in and see if it's any different. Specifically click the All Mail label as mentioned above.

Got to ask but does she have a good password and use 2FA on her account?

Doesn't click random emails etc.

Thanks everyone, this is obviously very worrying for her!

All Mail selected, no joy. Also same when logged in.

No, 2FA, but she does not select any links or even read any email which she does not recognise!

Panic!!!

This has happened to my father on two different occasions. Something about using gmail via the Apple mail app on iOS causes a problem and the emails disappear because of a misclick or unintended swipe action.

Every time we've seen this, the emails were marked for deletion and I was able to recover them by restoring from the deleted items folder. I know you say you've checked this already but maybe try the in:anywhere trick below to try and find where they've ended up:

If you can recover the emails, I suggest using the dedicated Gmail app from the app store on iOS as this has prevented this from happening again for my father.

Perhaps change the password and review recent logins… https://support.google.com/mail/answer/45938?hl=en...

Any filters on hiding her mails, e.g only show unread?

Sometimes it's simple like an option to show unread emails only.

ETA: hehe basically what the poster above said!

No help at present I realise but any important e-mails (or photos) should never be left on a phone.

Another option is Google Takeout:

https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/3024190...

This will retrieve absolutely everything Google have ever had from you and make it available for you to keep your own backup. You might find the missing mails in there?

My sky emails frequently vanish from my iPhone - never the iPad or PC

To get them back on the phone I need to delete the account ( settings, mail, accounts, delete the mailbox) then add the mailbox back in

May be one to try if you are still struggling

Thanks very much everyone.

Well, now sorted.

Still cannot explain what happened, but the emails were certainly all missing, as the memory size was far too low to be present. Search everywhere!

However, I ran the recovery tool in Gmail, and they all reappeared in their correct folders in about an our!

Still really odd……

Many thanks again.

Thanks, that’ll be next. It looks like a backup can be generated within gmail.

Look at the account activity in the bottom right of Gmail and see what logins there are.

I would definitely be changing her password and enabling 2FA just as good practice but especially if anything shows up in the activity report that you don't think should be there.

I really doubt this is a nefarious action on behalf of a hacker.

Why delete emails? What gain?

It seems like the user made a mis click or typo error or shortcut that wiped out the Emails.

Thanks - I checked all activity, and everything can be accounted for.

Yes, password changed and 2FA set up.

Cheers

I doubt it too and it sounds like it is just an accident or error or whatever but it's a good reminder to make sure you're in a good place security wise as when all your email disappears (whatever the reason) you tend to realise how important it is to you.
