SMS only works with data on?

My sons Samsung a32 will only send sms messages when he has his data turned on. We encourage him to keep it turned off as he tends to burn through it otherwise.

How do I get it to send with data off????

I understand that Samsung now use the normal Google Messages app for texts. Go to settings in the app and check if the Chat feature is turned on - turn it off if so. This feature (Rich Communication Service - RCS) offers enhancements that shows whether a message has been delivered and read like Whatsapp and uses data rather than the SMS system.

So the poor kid can’t even use WhatsApp or telegram??!

Stop being so tight and get him a data plan aligned to usage - they aren’t expensive!

He’ll turn it on and off when he needs to use it. He’s 12.
