Hi

Can anyone speak to the possibility of putting a pure android OS on a mobile phone that comes stock with a skin.

I like the Samsung flip phone a lot for example but really dislike the samsung skin and wondered if I can put the [Pixel] experience on a non-pixel phone.

[Yes I am aware this would invalidate presumably every conceivable warranty!]

Thanks

If a runner a pointer to any relevant resources would be appreciated

Best

Google doesn't put Pure Android (AOSP) onto a Pixel, it skins them as well.

If you want your Samsung to look more like a Pixel, there's loads of resources;

Oh thanks - will read. See at a skim Gboard not quite available as in Pixel.

The thing that really irks me is the duplication - Samsung Browser Google broswer. Ditto clock, calendar etc etc etc.

Non use of banking apps is not desireable at all!

I used to buy Samsungs and flash them, then realised I needed banking and have ended up with Nexus/Pixel devices since.

Would you say the launchers have limitations

I felt the same way about my current Samsung handset.
Spent a bit of time changing default browser and default clock and default calendar etc to the standard Google/android ones. The Samsung skin is now a lot less intrusive.

If you are talking about a Galaxy Flip 3, be aware there may also be a fair bit of custom coding for the screens. Unless XDA has loads of ROMS I would avoid fiddling with a new OS. Just go through the usual Android customisation channels as people suggest.

I've got the flip. I just spent a happy hour or so disabling the bits I didn't want. No need to fiddle with the ROM.

Launchers don't play well with gestural navigation since Android 11, they're a bit better with 12 but not as functional as a stock launcher.

I picked up a top spec S6 tab fairly cheaply the other day, my biggest gripe with it compared to my Pixel is the settings menu is an absolute binfire, little different to my 6 year old Tab A6 and a ballache to find things.

I think I was unaware just how changed my samsung android was until I was playing with a new pixel in a store. I'm not a huge techy but within seconds I had discovered intuitive gesture features. I moved away from Apple several years ago and my main hook into google is a deep like for google drive and photos, but were it not for that the range of form factors, screen / gesture interaction and frequency of waterproofing in apple world would be very tempting in my use case.

Think that might have been the tablet we sold. Greeting from Dorset.

Not intended to be an antagonistic question, but what gets lost with launchers?

I've had Samsung phones since the S3, jumping from Apple at the time due to the rigidity of their interface.

A lot of the Samsung "features" can just be disabled. And I've been using Nova Launcher for ages. It does everything I need it to, and I've not felt it lacking in swipe gestures etc. Am now "concerned" I'm missing out on something??

Mine's a Note 10+ and it's as fast as I need it to be, with smooth interactions etc. Face recognition works well enough (the fingerprint reader less so). And once I have it set to do what I want, I don't find me changing the interface side very often at all.
