My trusty iPhone 8 is now coming up to 4 years old and with the battery life at 79% I think it's time for a change. I've never been into having the latest phone or tech and use the phone for mainly browsing the net and youtube social media etc. Don't care about camera quality or other fancy features. I'm thinking to buy the latest iphone SE, it's not a bad price and it will be very familiar to use as it basically looks like the 8. Doesn't have facial recognition, although I've never had a phone with it so is it much of an advantage over the touch ID button?

The latest SE is a great handset for what it is and the price, the iPhone 12 (last years model isnt too far different in price though and thats a step up in camera and FaceID even if you aren't too bothered on the former)

The SE will easily handle your above needs

If you're not fussed about new features etc, have you looked at getting a new battery installed to your 8 at an Apple store? It's approx £50 but then again it will probably stop getting OS updates etc soon..

There's a really fundamental change with the faceID/fullscreen iPhones - not just how you unlock it but all the interactions for going home, switching apps, etc. IMO it's better but there is a time to get used to it. It's very hard to go back now.

If you want a better version of what you have now, the SE is brilliant. Latest fastest CPU and it'll last for ages with software updates etc.

If you want to try this new world, then the 12 or 13 are brilliant too.

It's also worth look at the Apple UK Refurb store. IIRC all phones on there come with new batteries, at substantial discount over new.

What's wrong with your current phone that a brand spanking new battery won't fix?
Face ID and Touch Id. - Not a game changer for me. My fingers are holding the phone either way. It's hardly a hardship.

But if you want a new shiny phone - Macrumors says now is a good time to buy.

I’d go Mini. Better in every way other than processor (the same) and if you look at the total cost over five plus years it’s…well,
probably double, but worth it!

Keep an eye on HUK Deals as the likes of GiffGaff and Vodafone have some good deals on refurbs. Often customer returns which are brand new.

Worth considering the iPhone 11 - they are now 489 new, have the same chip as the SE2 so still plenty fast enough, are IP68 instead of IP67, have FaceID and a bigger battery.

The SE has the same 4.7” screen as the older phones. It’s one reason I’m thinking of getting a 12 or 13 when I finally upgrade my 6S.

I don’t know if there is another thread on this so wonder if anyone can help me here.

Currently use iPhone 7 and it’s getting unreliable - shutting down randomly and camera not taking photos etc.

I’d like to replace with 8/ SE or another small form iPhone but it must have dual SIM.

I’d like to have a U.K. sim and a Middle Eastern sim in the same ‘phone. I understand that I can then just swap back and forth between providers and have only one handset.

I also think one of the two sims is an e-sim? Is that the one you’d use as the secondary, less used profile?

Thanks for any help - not tech savvy.

new genuine battery will work wonders, but Apple's planned obsolescence means it's probably down on speed and functionality.

Don't get an SE they have small memory and you'll be forever deleting photos as the camera resolution makes the files huge.

Solution:

Get an XR, it's half-way between the regular sized ones and the 'Max' ones, so neither too small nor too big, just right IMHO. But the best bit is it doesn't have the super duper camera or screen so the battery life is by far the best of the modern 'good' iPhones.
And can be had for circa £100-200 these days used/refurbed cond.

It's a great upgrade from the 8.
I've had mine since launch week to replace my 8, which, like you, had a battery that needed replacing. I'm not into the latest zomg shiny new thing for the sake of getting it and the SE is aimed at people like me, and it suits my needs perfectly.
The SE is very noticeably faster, still has touch ID - I'm not a fan of face ID at all having tried it - and will be supported for longer than the 8, and no new case required as the stuff from the 8 fits exactly.
You can still get near 90 quid from apple trade in or CEX for your 8 if it's in good condition too (or more if you want the hassle of private sales), so if you are happy with the 8, at the price of the SE, it's a no brainer upgrade.

I think you just toggle between them.
eg. Work phone..... toggle..... now personal phone.

You can't have both sims active at the same time IIRC.

Doesn't that come down to which capacity you choose to buy? https://www.apple.com/uk/iphone-se/specs/ - I don't think I could call 256GB small with a straight face.

Excellent- thanks. I hope it will just be case of toggling between one SIM and the other- just want to avoid the hassle of having a home ‘phone and a foreign one.

That’s probably the way I’ll go from my 6S seeing those prices.

Fair point well made, thought they were only 32gb based on a mates purchase and subsequent moans and my told you so’s.
