This is caning the nuts off my PC (desktop, Win 11). The cooling fan is constantly mooing up and down like a cow and task manager shows it's causing 'very high' power consumption.

I've googled and it seems to be a known problem, but I'm loathe to dig too deep in my PC based on random info from the net.

I'm not an IT person; can anyone here tell me in idiot-proof terms what to do to fix it please?

Probably a bug in Windows Photo viewer which I suspect you use quite a lot!

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/...

Does a reboot (Start > Power > Restart NOT shutdown) fix it until you've viewed photos?

If so, try installing a different photo viewer and setting it as default (Right click on a photo file > Open With > Choose another app (at the bottom) > Select new program and set to always use)

I'd recommend IfranView

wavey yes as it happens I was wading through big JPGs yesterday though I hadn't connected the two events.

I'll try Irfanview for a bit and see how it goes, thanks :-)

While you're on, a little question about Defender if I may. I noticed a little exclamation mark in my taskbar - hover and it says '
'Windows Security - Actions Recommended'. If I right click and choose 'Quick Scan' it wants me to look for an app in the Microsoft store, then says 'Results for "windowsdefender" - No results found'. If I go to 'My PC', right-click on the C drive and choose 'Scan with Microsoft Defender', nothing happens. Should I assume Defender is borked and download a third party program for scanning and malware etc?

Windows Defender is built into W11 and IMO does an adequate job and an additional AV program is not needed.

What do you see in Windows Security > Virus & Threat Protection - what does the Virus & Threat Protection Updates bit say?

If I right click on 'Check for protection updates' it says 'You'll need a new app to open this windowsdefender link', then 'Look for an app in the Microsoft Store' and that leads to 'Results for windowsdefender - No results found' as before.

Win11 is fully updated.

After a bit of a battle to find Windows Terminal...!

So we had to create another me. If my PC should break again, I just change into my alter ego, fix it round the back then return in glory biggrin
