Thinking of creating my own website as a bit of a hobby. When searching for places to host it I get lots of seat h results back for places like Go Daddy, who seemed to be geared more towards e-commerce than hobbies.

Can anyone recommend good site for hosting hobby style website? I am looking for something quick and easy to use to create and host the site.

Thanks

Go daddy is fine for hobbies, similarly wix.com and a host of other template based companies.

Our cycling club website is based on wix

Had problems with GD. I had to use my credit card complaints system to get it all settled. (Capital One - very helpful.)

Almost everyone is satisfied with their performance, going by the reviews, at least in those days.

I've been using a small indie since the early 2000s. 21 years this year. Cheap, and very helpful.

One option is Amazon AWS and use LightSail to bring up a WordPress (or whatever you want to use) site.

It'll cost about £5 a month for hosting plus a one off £10 or so domain registration fee if you need to register your domain name.

If you're creating a website as a hobby rather than for a hobby, then you don't actually need it to be live and hosted. You could just spin up whatever server on your PC and work entirely locally, accessible only on your local network and when the PC is turned on.

If it's as a hobby you won't learn loads using Wix or Word Press other than how to do that, but it depends why you want to learn as much as anything. If you want to learn how to quickly spin up websites then those sorts of things might be the way to go, if you want to learn to build from scratch then the answer will be different.

Install APACHE or Wordpress, PHP and MYSQL on your desktop and run it under LOCALHOST.

It works exactly the same as a Service provider and you have 100% control over it.

If you develop a site that you want to be seen by everyone, you can then transfer it to a hosting company.

You could do a lot worse than Amazon's AWS - they'll give you 12 months free on a low end machine which you can upgrade as needed if/when your site takes off. You'll still need to stick in your credit card but they won't charge you provided you don't go outside the free tier which you certainly shouldn't with a hobby site.

Just Google Amazon AWS.

I use Namecheap. Got a hosting package from them for a low level forum for peanuts. Also have some decent website builder software.

I totally recommend Blink Web, mine was moved from my previous hosting within days (of those days, 1 was a Sunday and 1 was a bank holiday). I think I ordered Sunday and was up, running (and breaking it) Tuesday.
