As we get older, we all suffer from some high tone hearing loss. It's slow and imperceptible but results in music become muddier and less well defined.

I realised that while my hearing is fine for normal use, music had lost some of the sparkle I remember (yes I still listen to some of the same music I liked as a teenager....)

So I got a free hearing test, got the audiologist to print out the audiogram and then entered the results into the custom audio page of accessibility on my iPhone (while my AirPods Pro were linked, otherwise it is not available, works with Beats headphones as well I think).

The result, a custom audio profile for my ears and music sounds as it used to once again!

The best thing is, if you are over 50, the hearing test is free, and probably worth having for health reasons anyway.

It also works for transparency mode so if you have mild hearing loss you can wear your Air Pods in transparency mode in noisy situations to give your ears a little boost even when you are not listening to music!

Clever things iPhones

(While I was there, I got some custom moulds made for £25 so I can send them off and get custom earplugs made for when I'm driving on track to help protect my ears.)

Great story.

Had no idea this sort of technology existed in iPhones!

Apple should carefully publicise this feature as I’ll bet there’s a lot of style conscious 50+ folk like me who could benefit but while they wouldn’t be seen dead with a hearing aid, would happily rock a pair of AirPods.

I expect some one will start customising AirPods in beige for the traditionalists though wink

Wow - I never knew - thanks for sharing

As someone who is starting to complain that people are mumbling or not speaking loudly enough, this could be handy smile

An alternative if you haven’t had a professional hearing test with an audiogram (although that is obviously a good idea if you think you have an issue) is to take a hearing test through the Apple Health app.

That generates an audiogram which you can then automatically apply in the accessibility settings described in the first post.

i thought they adjust automatically using pressure sensing etc. I have very little hearing in my right ear and mine balance it perfectly as if i had equal hearing.

The custom audiogram completely transforms them. In transparency they now transform previously dull and mumbly soundtracks (looking at you Disney Obi Wan)
