MY LAPTOP IS VERY SLOW

We'll need some more information. What is the spec of the laptop (CPU, memory, what kind of hard drive).
Fire up task manager. What is the CPU and memory doing?
Is it slow in use, or just starting things up?
The more you tell us, the more we can help. Or, as you say, just sod it and buy something new and shiny.

Replacing a mechanical hard drive with an SSD will show a quantum leap in how snappy the machine feels, but maybe isn't a vital first step. There are a few possibilities for what kind of spec an IdeaPad 520 might have, but it shouldn't be a particularly sluggish laptop.
Start with the basics: scan for malware, open Task Manager and see if there's a reason for it bottlenecking, and if necessary a fresh install of Windows. Give the registry cleaners a miss; they're not likely to provide any significant performance gains.

Have you tried just shutting the lid and not powering it off? My lap top is about 5/6 years old now and is slow to respond when booted up, it takes a good 10/15 minutes to work properly.
I tend to just close the lid and leave it in sleep mode and its rapid when I open the lid. I have thought about changing but the specs on my laptop are good and it works fine when left on.

ccleaner is garbage and as with all cleaners should never be used.
A clean install of windows and a start again approach will work, but if you have a HDD in your system swapping it out for an SSD will give your laptop a new lease of life and be much faster loading applications.

Doesnt a clean install of windows delete all your stuff?
From memory you get the choice to save documents or not. But like I said save what you need to a separate drive and do a full install back to factory settings.I gave up on Windows 3 years ago for home use for a decent Chromebook - never looked back except a few times I forgot my login details and lost my locally stored stuff No performance loss and no virus issues whatsoever.
I have a lenovo laptop (idea pad) which is 4-5 years old and got to be unbearably slow.
I learnt how to clone the HDD on to.an SSD and install it myself with very little IT knowledge and its now very fast, id say faster than when it was new.
I think it will keep me going for a good while longer now and the whole thing buying a SSD and a link cable cost me about £80 so I definately recommend it.
