Passed a Cex today and with some time to kill realised I had a few items with me I no longer needed with me and decided to see what they would give me for them . Now I'm not in financial need but thought I'd see if their offers were as insultingly low as I'd heard and read about. Shop was empty being the day after St Paddys Day.

So first was a iPhone X 256GB a new phone I'd got as a replacement and never used with 100% battery. Selling easily for £250 on eBay any day of the week Guy being the counter graded it as B before he'd even looked at it. Then he said he'd found a tiny spec on the side ( it was dust) and it didn't have the charge cable so offered £120. No deal.

Next is a few new in box items I got with a M1 24' iMac last week, I have a numerical Apple keyboard and Magic Mouse 2 in Space Grey so these new items were surplus to requirements. So first we have a Apple M1 Touch ID keyboard new in a box from Apple £149, Cex offered £20, absolutely hilarious. Next a Magic Touchpad from Apple £129, Cex offered £28 and lastly a brand new in box Magic Mouse 2 £80 from Apple, Cex offered £15. Honestly who is selling their stuff to them for so little.

Obviously I returned to the car with all my items. Honestly I know they are in business to make a profit but what they are offering is insulting. I mean you would need to be in desperate need to heat or eat. I have never heard of anyone getting a good deal in that shop

Also don't get me started on the smell, I'm not sure they've quite discovered deodorant the place stank of BO.

Lots can go wrong selling on eBay. if you look at completed/sold items on eBay you get a better idea. Unused phone of your model £219 recently. CEX also offer a warranty on stuff they sell that's been traded in.

Didn't it used to be about a third of their selling price if you wanted cash and two thirds in credit towards a part-ex? Presume they still do similar. You had a lot of clobber on you by chance!

Some people sell cars privately, others through WBAC or trade in. Effort/risk/reward varies. Different strokes.

I've not set foot in one for years but a while back bought a reasonably high-end phone that went wrong pretty much at the end of the 24 month warranty period. Took it into a branch and was refunded. By this time the same phone was selling for much, much less than my refund. I was delighted. Whoever traded it in took none of that risk.

CEX buy prices can be pretty appealing if you didn't pay for the stuff in the first place.

Although their requirements to be a ‘member’ - needed to sell to them for cash are stricter in Scotland so theres less of that tomfoolery there!

My wife needed a newer iPad.
I had a good unused android tablet and an iPad mini kicking about. Traded them both in plus a little cash and walked out with the iPad she needed with 2 year warranty.

The alternative of selling my old tech on eBay or Facebook didn't appeal in the slightest.

The only thing they chipped me on was the lack of an original charger on the android tablet,so they deducted £10.

All in all a hassle free transaction.

Quoted because, let me get this right: you passed a Cex and suddenly realised that you were conveniently carrying some unwanted SECOND HAND Apple tat including a four and a half year old used phone as well as some other notoriously overpriced peripherals?

I get it that this was the moment when it started to hit home how much Apple have been mugging you off over the years but there's no need to tell porkies.

As the OP said, they are a business to make profit. If you consider the costs of running the shop, paying staff, covering a warranty and taxes their prices are usually not too shabby. It isn’t fair to compare to eBay as a private seller, especially if you don’t take into consideration the circa 12% eBay steals in fees.

Music Magpie have tended to be better for phones. I’ve sold my last two iPhones to them for nearly as much as the eBay selling prices at the time and without all the eBay hassle.

Neither outfit has every tried to downgrade something from what I said it was to start with. CEX are quite strict, A usually means literally new but perhaps not sealed. This is great if you are then a buyer as you get a 24 month warranty on something that the manufacturer might only have covered 12 months and it is still basically new condition.

They are the “WeBuyAnyCar” of tech - offering you quick and easy cash for your items.

If you don’t like the offer, don’t use it.

I’ve sold a few phones to them over the years. Never newer stuff.
I’ve always found it quick and painless.

Selling old tech on eBay and dealing with time wasters and entitled folk with their “Best price for cash?” messages? No thanks….

They display their prices on their website. A poor condition iPhone X 256gb they say they'll offer £151, good £178 and mint £233.

The Magic Mouse 2 is £33 for grade A.

Maybe the buyer thought you had money to burn with all that unused Apple gear.

I've only been into a couple of stores. I thought a lot of the items they were selling wasn't in good enough condition. Prices were very high for used equipment.

I usually sell to CEX and take the voucher at a higher price. Then put the voucher on ebay when they have a sell for a pound offer. Takes a bit longer but gets the best return for minimum stress and avoids all the "give you 50 quid innit" tts.

Remember to post the voucher by recorded delivery and not send the buyer a photo of it.

FYI if you don’t have the box for the item, the highest grade it can ever be is a Grade B.

Yep, I always keep the boxes for my stuff and have never had any issues with CEX, I’ve bought and sold loads of stuff with them.

My thoughts also, why not just say it how it is.

It’s been a few years but I’ve sold to CEX before, Was less than I could have got off eBay but with less hassle and no risk, last time I sold anything off eBay was a year old iphone , mint condition yet the buyer put a claim in to say the phone wasn’t in the box, of course eBay sided with the buyer despite my proof.

I sell most of my unwanted tech with CEX. You get to know which branches are good and which one is variable. Mrs V. got a work Blackberry upgrade donkeys years ago but never used it (she did unbox and take off all the protective film). The local CEX said that the charging port was damaged. I had a look and couldn't see anything so refused their offer. Another CEX 15 miles away took it no problem. In contrast they couldn't see any problem with Vikingette2's mullered iPhone.

Some pricing can be mad - I got £125 for a Samsung Chromebook that I thought was barely worth £50.

Yup; I finally got rid of my old xbox 360 and a few games and anything better than 1p would have satisfied me. They knocked me down on price for what was a pristine system (albeit pretty much obsolete) but the process was painless; they provided postage, I sent everything off, got my money a week or two later.

I have sold them a few phones and gadgets a few years ago; just to get rid of them quickly rather than the hassle of ebay selling.
  • As others have mentioned, they seem make up their mind on the grade before they even see it (it will probably be grade B if it is excellent or reasonable).
  • Oddly they never wanted the charger for the phone! even when I say, "I don't want it, just take it" (I would have thought they could ask more!).
  • They don't advertise all their stock on-line (which was a bit irritating when I was trying to get rid of the vouchers).
  • Apparently grade A is a new phone, in box, plastic film on the screen everything.
Bought one or two things by post, that arrived in a terrible state (and definitely not due to the delivery firm), given that my boxed phone that was as almost as-new (other than the film over the screen), some of the grade B items were terrible, and went straight back, they did not quibble and did refund.

The weird thing I don't understand is they never change the price, so when something is getting older and older, they don't just get rid, so must have loads of things hanging around shops becoming increasingly obsolete.

I wanted a Nokia phone/paper weight I had about 20 years ago just for parts, and it is the same price as 5 years ago when I last had a problem (solved by a big coincidence as a colleague seen the phone and said "I still have one of them"), now still there and no change... I wanted to increase the memory on an old laptop before giving it to a relative, looked on Cex and it was nearly the same price as new (so I bought new), I looked again a few year later and it was the same price! Same with Pen drives, although I found new ones cheaper!!!

I have seen the same with a few things, I am just amazed they don't have a "bargain bin" for old stuff that they haven't been able to shift.
