Soon I can connect with Gigaclear.. reviews online suggest the service is patchy. As I work from home in media I need reliability . What's the PH crowds' experience with Gigaclear? I only know a few people with it and they seem happy which is encouraging, quite different to Google reviews...

We've had Gigaclear in our village for about 2 years but I've only been with them since the start of August this year. So far, I don't think I've had a single minute of downtime that I've been aware of but I do know my neighbour had an outage that was a bit long (2 weeks or so) but I don't know the circumstances and I'm sure it was well over a year ago. If it is critical for you, why not have a 4G router on standby with a Smarty SIM or similar?

I can get 900/900Mb, but have opted for their 400/400 service.

Edited to add - there used to be a Gigaclear employee on here so maybe they might be able to shed some light on their service availability etc.

Good call having a 4G box standing by. Are there any SIM deals now that are true 'Pay as you go' like I used to have way back, where no usage in a month = no fee that month?

To the best of my knowledge, 3 or O2. 3's charges have gone up reasonably recently (used to be 3p,2p,1p call, text, Mb) not sure what they are now (though I have one of their SIMs). You can get an O2 SIM from eBay (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/324080768612 ) that still has the 3p, 2p, 1p tariff (will cost 99p to buy) but what I'd suggest (assuming you have 3 coverage) is to buy a SMARTY SIM but don't activate it until you need it, You'll possibly need to use your phone's data (or work or other internet etc) to activate it (not sure - can't remember), but then it gives you coverage for 1 month.

Oh and possible bad news - Gigaclear use 'Complete Utilities' to do their ground works in the Glos/Hereford area - who have just ceased trading, so depending on where you are - there might be a longer wait....

I have been hooked up for a few weeks now (after a huge wait to get connected) - has been reliable so far.

Until 4 weeks ago, I was a customer. I've moved much further north and really miss my connection.

I used Gigaclear for about 4 years. No major issues. They drop you mail to give you notice about downtime, normally from 11pm > 6am.
Can't fault them really from my experience.

One of our Friends also used GC and someone further up the road cut through the fibre cable with a digger. That took them 3-4 weeks to fix.

I've used them for probably 5 years now as there was no alternative (regular broadband via copper line was 1.5mb max and still is now).
To start with, they were patchy with frequent dropouts and downtime but in the last couple of years, they've been pretty good and stable.
The best bit is you can ditch BT altogther including your landline.

Been with them for about 6 months on the 400/400 plan.

Never had a drop out that I'm aware of. Also a plus was we already used 3 triband Velop nodes so now have 5.

They did everything I wanted on the install taking the feed into the upstairs office. From order to install was just over a week. Overall great so far ( will probably all go to st now)

No idea how good/bad the service is but they certainly made a mess putting in their cables.

Broke my wall, used my garden as a rubbish bin, loads of pre-tarred stones in the lawn, it was so bad I do not believe anyone has signed up for their service because of it.

I would not have been surprised if they used my garden as a toilet as well.

Oh Jeez.
Well, I'll be here tomorrow when they connect so wont stray too far away.
Their outside digging up has been largely good (other than pissing off the neighbours )

We've had all the roads here dug up and ducts laid. I've been staring at a fibre duct outside the window for about 6 months. Recently, we've finally got a PoT installed right by the house.

But the next step seems elusive: I was able to sign up and book an install in December, but the install was cancelled ("Infrastructure isn't ready") and I can't get a new install date. It's like everything gone into a black hole.

Several of our neighbours on the same fibre now have install dates, although some others still can't book an installation. How long should it take from ducts going in to system going live - and is there any reason why one house can book, but another - literally next door - can't?

(Currently getting ~12Mb/s on 4G ASDA Mobile, £30/month unlimited. ADSL is 1Mb/s... )

Getting my connection here was a serier of seemingly independent phases, over several months. Annoyed many neighbours too (the ones that get annoyed about a lot of things, admittedly).

First big dig got around 50m away and I was delighted to see the work happening. Options discussed with GC over the phone, speed agreed, and order placed.

Few weeks later, GC cancelled the order as 'there was a bit more to do...' before then can connected me.

Lonnnng wait. Next team, next dig to 15m.

Long wait. then a van for a day or two, fiddling with chunky wires.

Long wait. Another van, more wire fiddling. No closer though.

Medium wait. Then, the final connection, which took 4 hours, 2 vans, and many many men.

Now its in, it's great. Getting here was hard.

Installation on Friday! Whoop de doo...

Fingers crossed it doesn't get cancelled again, but one of our neighbours is now online with it. It's needed almost daily pestering of their customer support t get this far - most of our other neighbours can't even place an order yet, despite being on the same fibre duct.
