So to cut a long story short, I've currently got an Ikea Markus chair, which I've had for around 5 years or so, and it's done me well, but when I bought it, was meant to be used a few hours a week, for the odd game here and there. I don't find it uncomfortable particularly, but I'm now sitting in it 8 hours a day.

Work have offered to pay £500 towards some office equipment. I can't think of anything else that might be of benefit so I'm thinking of going for a seat, hence the thread.

I've been doing a fair bit of reading, and conventional wisdom seems to suggest that the top end office chairs are still superior to their gaming counterparts, BUT, there are a few fairly vocal supporters of using gaming chairs stating that they are more comfortable than the best office chairs.

Any experiences with this?

Currently I'm leaning towards a Steelcase Please v2 closely followed by the HM Aeron but I must admit I do enjoy the designs of the gaming seats too.

Buy something that will respect your back. So either the steelcase or the HM. Secretlabs chairs look like their target market are 14 year old minecraft / fortnite players (because they are!)

I have a HM Embody. 3 years so far and it's as good as the day i bought it. You can get them for 500 if you search around.

HM embody, aeron and mirra are good. Steelcase are good.
I prefer Hag Tribute.

If you can try out some before buying then would be good, as some designs will suit you better than others.

Wife stole my office chair for work and I'm stuck on a dining chair for now

I've had a Herman Miller Aeron for about 2 years now and can't fault it. They're not cheap new but they are very good. I've had a couple of instances where I've had to be at my desk for 15 / 16 hours (thankfully that is the exception!) and I've had zero issues with comfort etc.

I've just had a quick look on eBay and there are plenty for sale that fall well within your budget.

Office chair = company’s paying = inflated price? No idea, but my Secretlab Titan is certainly more comfortable than my office chair.

We aren’t limited to what we can buy or where we can buy it from. Don’t know about the price being inflated either, but it hardly matters when I’m not paying smile

HM Mirra 2nd hand for £200 or thereabouts - bought one from fleabay 7 years ago and take it with me on contracts if the client's chairs are carp. Have since bought 2 more - can't fault them other than replacing the casters with polyurethane ones that work well on hard floors.

HM Mirra II here - bought it 3 months ago from crown for 375, expensed it ... it is absolutely fantastic having a proper chair again. As said above, it’s like a glove no matter how long your day - I got a set of the poly wheels off eBay for 20 quid as well

HM Aeron Remastered. Exceptional, and still seems as new as the day I bought it. Big fan of the mesh too.

I’ve two Noble “Epic” chairs, one for work office and other for home office.

Spend approx 10-12 hrs a day spread across both of them, fairly firm seat, but for me, someone who broke his back in 7 places 18 yrs ago and so who really suffers, they are a god send.

Can’t imagine sitting in anything else.

Just purchased a second hand HM Aeron Remastered - magical.

Most comfortable chair I have ever used. Seems to be very well built...but it is only a year old.

I posted on PH looking last week looking for advice on the Steelcase Please V2, but had no replies and took a gamble. It’s everything I thought it would be and I’m happy.

I have a problem with slouching and hunching and have to consciously sit straight, or not slide my bum away from the seat base to slouch.

It helps encourage me to sit correctly and if I do recline it still keeps me in a correct position when I sit upright again. I have a bit of discomfort sometimes, but I suspect that’s because I always used to give into slouching and sliding. At the moment I’m determined to sort this out through sitting correctly and exercise. It’s a good mix of comfort and encouraging good seating habits.

Came within a week and is near perfect condition. No affiliation but recommended based on my rent purchase. Can see the char in my recent photo within the home workstation thread.

Be aware that if you're buying new there are some very long delivery times on custom Herman Miller chairs. eg. 20+ weeks for Embody.

Thanks all, seems I won't go wrong with any of the usual suspects. Only one slight concern with buying second hand is the condition of the seat that you will end up with but I'll just buy it on credit card just in case, but most companies who deal in this market are happy to replace if you're not happy it seems. I'll have a bit more of a think and probably pull the trigger at the weekend.

Ideally you need to try the chairs out, just nigh on impossible to do even when not in silly season.

As to HM Aeron - I was workign one place where suddenly they invested in these for everyone, great until we found out there was no pay rise that year. As a short arse (5'4") with back problems I found them to be hideously uncomfortable and I was not alone. Most loved them, but I reckon about 10% of us had issues. HM chairs are not as perfect as a lot of people make out, however for most they do work very well.

I have a Steelcase Please 2, and use a Leap 2 at work.

The Please 2 is the best chair I have ever used. I love it.

I don't get on with the Miller chairs, have used a few of them but find the shape of the seat base uncomfortable.

The 'gaming chairs' just seem like junk chairs to me.

I've worked from home for nearly 20 years so have been through a few cheaper chairs but bought a Herman Miller Aeron in 2006.
It felt crazy expensive at the time and thought I was mad spending that much on chair but I'm still using the very same chair today without problems or any fault with the chair.
I've spend god knows how much on different desks, equipment and other office stuff but have never thought of replacing the chair.

I’ve plumped for the Aeron smile

https://corporatespec.com/product/refurbished-herm...

Decided against the gaming seats as I’m just not sure they’d have been as good really, despite really liking the way they look. The mesh design appeals as I’m hot blooded, and its a very warm house especially in summer, not to mention presumably a bit less prone to the seat cushion compressing. This one says its the fully loaded version and refurbed.

I decided against the Please v2 as I did read of some issues with build quality, although I was very tempted to go with it.

If I don’t get on with it, then I’m sure I’d be able to re-sell it without making too much of a loss - well none really as I’m not paying in the first place.

Thanks for this. I have just ordered one too.
