Now here's a question to conjure with.

When I moved to the Lake District, I was with T-Moblie. When I found their signal was
ste, I complained and they blamed me for moving!

Anyway, I've struggled with the same issue ever since until O2 introduced Tu Go so I could
use WiFi calling - until they took it away again.

At Christmas, I'm moving 90 miles South, to Marple Bridge. The same problem
exists there. It's either a 150-yard trudge to the road find a signal or or a much longer hike up
the field to the sheep gate.

Having quizzed O2, I found that my current handset (Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra) doesn't support
WiFi calling. So I just went eBaying and bought a mint used XA2 Ultra - it arrived today.

Snag is, WiFi calling can't be activated in the settings menu 'cos it ain't there. But I'd ensured that this handset does support the WiFi calling. Having verified this with O2, EE and others, I went ahead and did the deal.

Now,I find out it's down to the carrier and this may/can/will involve having the right firmware on the phone.

I'll be having a chat with O2 tomorrow but has anyone experienced this with another carrier?

Just to rub salt into the wound, Mr. eBay seller No.2 sent a new case for the phone today. It'd be lovely if my new phone was an XZ2. Wrong!

I just love tech sometimes.

I'm with EE and use a Google pixel phone. I get the option to use wifi calling although I havent needed it.

I also visited Marple Bridge recently and had service. Are you sure none of the networks cover your new home? It would be worth a few pounds of PAYG sims to see if you can get service with any of them. If not then I guess wifi calling would do what you need.

Is it locked to a network?

Why don't you update the firmware yourself?

I have a Pixel 3 on O2 and O2 had to enable my account for wifi calling before the options appeared on the handset after a restart. Might be worth a quick live chat with them.

I'm also in a lousy signal area so bought both of us an Xperia XA2 and signed up with ID (very good deal).
WiFi calling works seamlessly in my house and switches over automatically at my Mums.

Would certainly recommend the phones and provider....

I know a couple of people with Vodafone Sure Signal. Appears to work very well and they always have rock solid 3g in their houses.

It seems to be a bit random, is the answer.

I'm on Three UK.

Wifi calling didn't work on my Moto G7 Power even though it supports it. Previous Lenovo P2 DID work with wifi calling on Three UK.

Three UK said as they don't sell the G7 Power , it's not supported and I'd have to buy a phone from them.

Other people on the net say Moto G7 Power works with wifi calling with their carriers.

Sold G7 for other reasons.

Got Xiaomi Mi9, same Three UK, now wifi calling DOES work.

I think its just about tech standards of each phone, and whihc carriers support what, on their networks.

In any event, your chance of the person on the end of the phone at O2/Three/EE etc knowing what they are talking about are as near to nothing as makes no odds.

Coo, thanks gents,

I had a word on the (land) phone with, O2 customer services and was told that because the phone wasn't bought from them, it can't be done. Funny how this is at odds with what the shop said. They couldn't supply a phone that suited so I bought the XA2 on the strength of their advice.

Someone said I should install the firmware myself and I'd love if I knew (a) where to get it and (bl how to fit it.

Looks I'll be doing some PAYG testing.

I'm not sure if it's still the same, but EE didn't used to allow Wi-Fi calling on PAYG.

I'm on the Three network (PAYG) and use wifi calling on my Samsung A5, it has to be a unit with the Three firmware or it will not have the option to switch it on.

My missis has the A3 which was using wifi calling until I had to change the motherboard to a non Three FW one and it now had lost that function.

I went away from EE when I changed from a contact to PAYG as they dont allow Wifi calling on PAYG, I dont believe Vodafone does either, not sure on O2

Part of the issue here is carriers wouldn't make any $$$ if they didn't lock the phones to the WiFi network (as it's a hidden cost in your tariff).

When I worked for a global communications company we had a product (which in some ways was corporate WiFi calling) which never got off the ground in Europe simply because the carriers didn't own the WiFi infrastructure so would be loosing out on revenue.

Now it's available for consumer use their way to ensure they still get their cut is to lock down the firmware and control it that way unfortunately.

I'm on Three with a phone I bought elsewhere. Stock Xaiomi firmware, never been near Three. WiFi calling works fine. In fact I rely on it.

So I can 100% confirm it does NOT always have to have Threes firmware on it.

Like I said, it varies.

I am on contract sum only, pay monthly.

I went to the O2 shop and the lad, Josh, tried very hard, Today, the chap I'd seen previously started fibbing. I'd asked if an XA2 could be enabled for WiFi and 3G calling. He said 'yes' so I went ahead and bought the phone I'd seen in eBay.

Now he claims he said it'd work if it was an O2 phone. He previously said nothing of the sort. I'd told him the phone was unlocked and I bought on the strength of his advice.

Lying runt.

Well, the plot's a-thickening so here's the latest.

The O2 staff member told outrageous porkies
to cover his arse and made out I was lying so
I'll be going back on Monday to consult the helpful one.

Meanwhile, it looks like Three UK can do the business re
WiFi calling with their sim and some software but usage
is chargeable at mobile rates.I've asked for confirmation of these matters.

The next step is to see if the landline/broadband provider at
my new address can do VOIP and if so, for how much.

So now,i i's a watch this space job.

Oh goody...

Different network and phone, but similar issues previously....

Bought Samsung from EE shop - wifi calling - 'smashin.

Upgraded phone mid way through contract to a non EE supplied handset from Argos etc.... chucked in the EE SIM, no WiFi calling - Oh bugger.

Googled some - downloaded the original EE firmware, loaded it on and voila, WiFi calling back on the non EE supplied handset.

Regardless of whom is telling you what in O2, a non network provided handset wont work on WiFi calling as it is. You need to flash the firmware onto it.

Head over to forums like XDA and ask there how to do so on your handset - may even fine YT videos helping too.

Thanks, Tomo 1971, your input is much appreciated.

There are two outcomes from today's machinations:-

I called Three UK and the lady said that I can have Wi Fi calling (charged at standard mobile rate)
with one of their sim cards. So I went into Poundland, got a sim for a pound and put £10 on it as advised.
Tomorrow,I'll put this into my AX1 Ultra, which I know doesn't support WFC with O2 and see what happens -
it may be a workaround.

And I've just posted on the XDA forum, asking if I can get the necessary O2 firmware
and if I can have a walkthrough (the for dummies kind) on how to do the flashing thing.

Meanwhile, I've 'moved into' my new XA2 to an extent, by transferring files from a backup of the XA1 on my laptop
and I've added CoPilot, Alarm Clock Extreme and the mobile banking app. Autobackup with Google Drive is also switched on.

So, I'm here with things crossed, pending a reply form the XDA folk. I hope it works
because I'd dearly love to return to the O2 shop and, like Krtyen, engage smug mode.
If it does work out, I'll call the shop via its own WiFi, walk in and claim I fixed it!

Might I suggest that if your exploring the world of flashing firmware, maybe start with your old XA1 first to get some experience, so as maybe to avoid an expensive mistake with your new phone.

Android 6 added support for carrier specfic config to be applied rather than baked into the firmware
https://source.android.com/devices/tech/config/car...

A model launched in the last 3-4 years that your network claims to support wifi calling with should just work and not need a custom firmware, and really should be the same for anything older that can be updated to android 6+, so basically any phone.

The state of wifi and 4g calling is a complete mess, networks seem to be deliberately obstructive to rolling it out, and even worse about giving information on what they support, presumably it is a useful sales tactic to still be able to imply you need buy your handset direct, and need to be using the latest handset.

Thanks, hutchst, wise words.
I'll be putting the XA1 on eBay shortly so it's probably best not to play.

That said, I bunged in a 3 PAYG card and put £10 on it as advised. But after 3 goes out of four, it won't unlock. I may try it in the XA2, which I know is unlocked.

Meanwhile, I've asked for an unlock code for the XA1 from O2.

Meanwhile 2, there hasn't been anything from the XDA forum yet.

Edit at 00.33: In the XA2, the 3 card gives a sim
error.
