I have a 10k road trip around North America booked for August.

I want to track my route (not fussed about speed etc) and be able to display the whole trip on one Google map screen on my computer when I get back. Ideally broken down with each night stop obvious to see.

I have an Android phone.

I know Google maps timeline tracks routes but can I display multiple days trips on one map on my computer at the same time? Also, I would like to be able to create a link/copy etc of our route so I can email it to relatives.

Failing that, what app? Happy to pay for it.

I'd use Google, maybe Stava can do it?

I’ve used this before in road trips.

I quite like it and you can add all your photos and make an album as well.

I've not needed to use this for a few years, but it was brilliant when I wanted to live-track some bike rides a decade or so ago. I'm sure it's much better now.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=LEM....

It will export a .kml file live to a server so people can open the file in Google Earth and see where you are. Good options around loss of signal etc from what I remember.

Have a look at this: https://locatoweb.com

I used it on a recent LeJoG trip but must have had it configured wrong as on some days it 'straight lined' from one location to another whilst on other days it was perfect. I never did master how to embed a link on a website for live tracking though friends have managed it OK.

Buy a tk102 tracker, set it up once you get there with a US SIM.

Plug it in to the cig socket (they run off of Nokia batteries, so you could pick up a couple of spares and plug in chargers for a few quid too).

ETA - click on Demo Login at the bottom to see, er, a demo....

That might have potential, if I can work out how to export a gpx file of my track.

Not fused about live tracking that others can see in real time, but would be nice to be able to email a copy of where we've been to relatives.

I use Relive, linked to either Strava or Garmin, to create a funky vid of my running routes.

What I don't know is if it will (a) do multiple days and string them together and (b) cope with a million miles of data in one hit.

Anyway, an example (not one of mine) ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2Y2DFpeKG0

The tk102 trackers can show you your route from 1 to 30 days, and export to gpx. It's not just live tracking.

I'm fairly sure that any of the automotive range from Garmin do this as a matter of course - both of mine do (Zumo for the bike, DriveSmart for the car). They produce a track-log (in Garmin parlance) which can be saved and exported as a .gpx file. Whether that could be displayed on GoogleMaps I'm not sure.

As it overwrites the track after a given number of data points, you may need to copy/convert it each day/segment/whatever.

Any new suggestions for a journey-tracking app or device?

I was very happy with Google Maps Timeline to record my various road trips, but now that Google has removed the ability to view these timelines on a computer (I had relied upon them for years) I need to find another solution.

I'm going on a 25-day European road trip in my Boxster soon and I'd like to record my entire journey. One sort of solution is to use a dashcam to record the journey, as it saves the GPS track embedded in the video files. The downside of this is that I would have to remove the SD card and save the footage daily to ensure that the dashcam doesn't overwrite the older files as the card fills up. I have a fairly large card in mine, but it's old and the software is no longer supported and it was quite flakey to begin with.

Last year I experimented with iPhone-based apps like GPS Tracks and GPX Tracker, but in both cases I found that the app stopped recording if moved to the background. I never managed to save a track more than a couple of hours long since I was also using my phone for other things including navigation, researching hotels and restaurants etc.

I have an old iPhone 7 and also a Sony Xperia XZ1 which I could plug in to power and leave in the glove box for the entire trip running one of those apps, but I have little faith in either to keep recording over a few weeks and I want a solution that I don't have to keep checking all the time.

Would I be better off with a physical Garmin GPS unit? Or are there any smart watches that do that, for example sports ones? I'd like something that can create standard GPX files to import into maps or Google Earth or whatever exists in 20 years. I don't want to be caught out by the Google deciding to withdraw features on a whim.

Thanks!

I'm not sure what you mean; I can see all my road trips since 2013 on my timeline.

So can I. I can see them on my phone and PC. Unless they removed them yesterday!

I can't. It tells me I have to use the app on my phone. If the change hasn't rolled out to you yet, then count yourself lucky!
