Looking to do some checking before track-days...

Anyone use any of these DB meter apps for smartphone (esp. iPhone)?

How accurate are they? Any recommendations?

Sound level measurements are a minefield...

Are track day limits in dB(A) or dB?

(A is a weighting curve applied to take accou t of human hearing).

If the limits are dB(A) you may struggle to find an app that will apply the weighting correctly (if at all).

Not accurate at all. The main issue is the microphone in a phone is designed for human speech. The various frequencies involved in a car exhaust won't play to the phones strengths.

I borrowed a db meter from a friend and tried a few android apps. They were close enough. If your car is close to the limit do something to quieten down. Otherwise you risk wasting money when your car fails.

We run an XJS V12 race car and with silencers it comes in around 95bd.

If you can't borrow a meter goto a track day and ask the noise testers if you can compare ur results to theirs?

You'd be much better off getting a Digital Sound Level Meter off ebay or amazon

I use this one https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/db-volume/id457245...

It's accurate enough to give you a guide, close to my proper dB meter. It has an 'A' weighting option and a peak hold.

Thanks for all the great tips and suggestions. I'll try the suggested iPhone app and then buy a dedicated DB meter if still required.

Don't go further than that link. SLPnFFT for £2.99 is as accurate as a $2000 model!

Done!

Bought it. Looks good. All the features I need.

I have nothing to compare it to, but it should be good. First track day will confirm.
