I am heading across France, Italy and Switzerland in 2 weeks..

I have spent a good deal of time so far planning the exact route i want to take however to ensure i do not go wrong i want to know if i can plan the routes on a computer then upload them to a sat nav.

I have a 2013 W204 with command but i would imagine I need to go with a 3rd party Sat Nav. I have looked at TomTom but i cannot seem to find a definitive answer online. There seems to be some 3rd party sites which require subscription and then worst case i can go with the old paper map option.

Any suggestions are welcome.

I've recently done the same for a forthcoming trip, and have transferred most of the routes the routes onto a mini SD card which plugs into the Garmin I bought. One or two sections I had to generate in the Garmin by means of loads of way points along the route I wanted.

What phone do you have?

Most Android / Windows phones have this capability.

Try this one:

It's easy to create the maps; you can export them to Tyre and save them in a form which can be transferred to TomTom, Garmin or even, it says BMW.

One warning I have heard but am not sure about. Only the earlier TomToms accept itinerary points. So best to buy a secondhand One,XL,XXL.

Hope this helps.

This is correct I'm afraid. Strange how such a useful function disappeared as the models were (apparently) "upgraded"! I use TYRE with the One XL and it's great a combo. Conveniently TYRE can be downloaded for £0.00.

Some mates I tour with regularly have recently got reconditioned TomToms direct from the manufacturer. Just make sure it's a model capable of itinerary planning wink

Thanks for the all the replies.

I have found a Tomtom XL IQ Routes Edition Europe for sale locally. It seems to have a SD memory card slot.

Can anyone confirm if this will work?

It was the version 3 devices that were "hobbled" if it is a version 2 device, which I'm sure it is then it will be ok.

As a side note, it is mentioned on the tyre to travel website in the FAQs (Para 7) that the newer versions can be hacked to support itinerary planning by altering the menu structure.

I haven't personally used it, but my sister seems to be getting on ok with co-pilot which does support itinerary planning.

I use Co-Pilot when planning trips on my andriod (Galaxy S5). I put the phone on flight mode once it running as it uses GPS. Seems pretty user friendly for what I use it for. IIRC it was £15 to get the full app to allow it to be used as a sat-nav.
