Can someone explain spotify to me?

I think I'm being a bit dense but how does spotify work?
Is it a case of paying £10 a month and you can download as many songs as you like?
I have an iPhone and iTunes. Where do the songs go when you download them? Or is it a cloud thingy? Does it sync with iTunes?
I like the idea of a tenner a month for all the music I like but can't really get my head around it.

I pay a fiver a month and use it along side my usual music habbits.

Spotify is probably the app I use most. I love offline mode - perfect for my commute (underground). I love nicking everyone elses playlists and sites like topsify. I love that it works with my sonos at home. It's a great invention.
As for the earlier Q - when you download tunes so you can listen to them using offline mode, you can go for upto 30 days without having to log back in - so also perfect for holidays.
When spotify was released, it was great, for free you had basically a personalized radio station (ads would play every x amount of time but you could create playlists)
If you paid, you'd get ad free listening. Great!
Then they decided to be a bunch of dicks and limit how long the free accounts could listen along with making the premium services a lot more complicated. If you give someone something and then take it away or make it worse, you're an asshole.
I absolutely will not pay for spotify ever, most of the money probably avoids the hands of the artists (not far off itunes though there) but on principle I think they're a shady group of b

Totally my selfish, arrogant, non-business based opinion. I liked spotify but I don't see any reason for them having taken away what was once free other than them wanting to exploit consumers and/or their service not being good enough to justify the cost without degrading the free service.

Youtube is more track by track listening isnt it? You cant listen to one track and find the next one to queue up, you cant even listen to a whole album without trouble. You cant even guarantee listening to an able at the same bit rate.Youtube is very very good but for music Spotify pretty much kills it in every aspect.
