My new torch

I have been following the various torch threads we have on here and have mostly had cheap torcjes which I use in my job as a surveyor and when walking the dog. And then I decided to take the plunge and on then strength of a review in a walking magazine one of these popped through the letterbox yesterday.



It's BRILLIANT....

I turned into a kid and wanted to do evrything at home last night by torchlight. For a double AA torch to be putting out 245 lumens is impressive enough on paper, but taking my black dog out down a dark lane it was wonderful! This whole torch game is potentially addictive!

Very nice, the CREE XP-G R5 is a nice LED - not too throwy and not too floody, a good compromise.

I see the link you posted says they are out of stock at the moment.

Now you're addicted you may as well cut out the learning curve and go straight for one of these, Olight SR90 Intimidator, 2200 lumens with a range of 1000 metres, £315:

To be honest I went for the one in the OP because it seems to offer a lot of performance for the money. I could SO easily have spent load ore quids, but figured sub £35 was a not unreasonable indulgance!

Noticed some 1000 lumen (supposedly) torches on ebay for less than 20 quid - are they worth a punt?

A few lads at work have LED maglites and I want to put them in their place!

I think the max an XM-L emitter can output on a single 3.7v 18650 battery is about 500 lumens.

Ultrafire is cheap and cheerful Chinese stuff but OK for the money even if they do exaggerate.

The light from this torch will exceed your friend's Maglites many times over.

After reading a similar 'What Torch' thread, I too was obsessed by turning night into day, and bought an LED Lenser for locking the chickens up at night. Now I can melt a bantam at 100 paces.

When I saw the original "What Torch' thread title, I thought, "WTF? How can you run a thread on that?", but was strangely drawn in. What a knob.

i got that exact torch from dealextreme earlier in the year, its not bad for a small unit but wouldnt say its a 1000, as i have another 1000 lum torch and the ultrafire isnt as bright, but for the money its great value, build quality is good and battery lasts for ever

It's good for the money but it's not 3000 lumens.

Olight make a similar item with a 1700 lumen max.

However, the Olight is £250.

Also, although it will be mega-bright, it will not have a huge amount of throw.

The sheer brightness can make up for throw though, for that money you can't lose. Go for it.

Don't forget you will need at least two Li-ion 18650 batteries and a charger.
