The Windows/PC support thread
Discussion
Is this necessary?
CG&S, IMO, has always been one of the more polite areas of PH - I simply don't recognise the fan-boy issues that this new approach seems to want to rule out - and I suspect that most answer a question based on a quick flick through the titles and think 'Ooh I know something about that topic I'll contribute'.
Having a support thread is too much like real work IMO.

I have read the rules and hope I am posting this correctly?
I have a problem with Microsoft Outlook Express, my inbox has emptied after the wife got her hands on it. She swears that she did nothing untoward, but there were several thousand emails in it so it may have auto archived or such like??
All the other folders are intact (sent, drafts etc.)
What should I try?? as I don't want to do further damage??

I haven't used outlook express in a long time but Outlook (full version) prior to 2007 used to have major issues if the mail box got too large. It is possible that the outlook messages file has become corrupted.I have a problem with Microsoft Outlook Express, my inbox has emptied after the wife got her hands on it. Hi guys, i'm struggling with hyperlinks and hopefully one of you guys can help.
I have an excel worksheet and i'm trying to hyperlink to a particular page in adobe. I have only got adobe reader is it possible? as at the moment i can only hyperlink to the full document and not a particular page. I believe i can do it by using the bookmarking feature but as i only have adobe reader and not the full version of adobe i've been told it isn't possible, i'm just hoping there is another way.
Many thanks in advance!

Can't help with that ,but do you know that by default OE deletes the mail on webmail when ownloaded .To change go to tools /accounts/properties/advanced and tick the relavent box.Handy if you delete one in OE by mistake .I have a problem with Microsoft Outlook Express, my inbox has emptied after the wife got her hands on it. My Dell laptop has a Western Digital HDD which has died. The fault is in the power supply section of the PCB. Does anyone know of a (cheap) way that I may be able to recover the data from the drive?
Is that section modular? Could you buy another drive of the same type and swap the bits over?HereBeMonsters said:

(HP laptop, Win 7)
When I'm scrolling up/down an internet page using the arrows on the right, it 'sticks' and scrolls all the way to the bottom even though I havent got the trackpad button depressed. - Didnt do this yesterday!
Sometimes when I click links it takes 2/3 clicks before it reacts to my clicks. I also often get a symbol like a no-entry sign when I click on links. Its dragging things all over the place and driving me up the wall. As I type this, when I move the cursor around some of my text ends up highlighted in blue. Any ideas what I can do/try before I launch it from the roof?
I've use Firefox but have tried IE as well, all the same.

Just to be clear, you mention a trackpad and a mouse. Do you have a mouse plugged in, as well as using the trackpad? (Not a silly question, my wife does this all the time...) (HP laptop, Win 7)

If the problems are all with the trackpad, have you let the pad become contaminated? Mine shows those symptoms if my fingers are wet or if I've been eating greasy food. A good clean might help. Try connecting a USB mouse and see if that works properly.
If you have problems with a mouse, is it wireless/infrared, and have you tried new batteries?
Need a little help.
Think my laptop is on it's way out.
Every so often (getting steadily more regular) the screen will go off and it'll effectively die. The lights showing that it's on are still on, and the light on the disc drive comes on and remains on with the added bonus that you can't open it.
It's fairly old now (2007 I think) so could just be the lasting effects of a few years abuse but I'm in no financial position to get a new one and my Macbook Pro buggered itself sideways a while back so I'll be screwed with no laptop.
Any thoughts from anyone?

Do you think it's a software problem (as in, PC is going into some sort of standby mode) or a hardware problem - the screen is literally failing and turning off?
If the former, fiddle with your power and standby settings in Control Panel. If the latter, try an external monitor and see if it also turns off when the laptop screen does.
Was it an expensive laptop, or could you just throw it away and start again?

I think it's hardware related to be honest. It wasn't hugely expensive at the time, just a decent laptop that I picked up. At the minute I don't do much more than browse the internet on it (using Chrome) and it seemingly happens at random points.
The only problem is that I don't have an alternative and can't afford a new one so I'm basically stuck with this and it's issues.
