I know music files such as mp3s can be converted to midi with various software (haven't found a free version).

But before I go paying for something has anyone any experience to the level of detail I would get?

Reason I'm asking is that I am buying a digital piano which has a screen on it and it can convert a midi file into the actual music score (notes). So was wondering what the conversion would be like from mp3 to midi.

Thanks in advance!

It's not great, TBH. If it's a very simple melody with single notes the transcription may be fairly accurate, but if it's a full recorded song with chords, multiple instruments, and singing, any software is going to find it difficult.

Think of it as the software that converts scanned images into text, and how rubbish those tend to be if you try to get it do convert a squirly font and you'll not be far off.

Cheers. I did wonder how good it could be with the complexity of the task!

Anyone know of a free software to try first?

I had this issue yesterday and online ones restrict you to 5 or so at a time, unless you pay up.

However ,

Free midi to mp3 converter from 2010 let's you do 50+ at a time

Using this I managed to put most of my collection on you tube, though sadly a 12 hour limit

I didn't think anyone downloaded from there anymore, due to their propensity to repackage legitimate apps with nagware/bloatware/malware/spyware into the installers (same goes for softonic.com, download.com. macupdate.com, etc.).

But your solution seems to be the exact opposite of what the OP wanted, which was a tool to convert an audio file to midi...not convert midi to audio file.
