hey guys,

I'm applying for a job which needs a application form, CV and a 'personal profile' - containing previous work experience, personal achievements, interests and ambitions.

Seems like a waste of time to me, as the important stuff is on my CV anyway.

So - a question to all you HR gurus - what form should this profile take - set it our like a CV, or should it be prose, a lovely story about me, if you will?

Its is to be 1 side of A4, no more, no less.

TIA

Do NOT do it in prose that will bore the pants off the reader.

Bullet point with headings. Have they given you a list of headings? You say above they want a

"'personal profile' - containing previous work experience, personal achievements, interests and ambitions"

Well why don't you use them as your headings and customise them to the job for which you are applying? If is is an engineering job eg:

Personal Achievements
. Degree in engineering achieving highest mark in year in grommet design
. Developed new way of manufacturing metal wiget thus saving £x thousand pounds for the company

Interests
. I have rebuilt my 1970 Ford Escort which included the manufacture of new parts for the engine.
. I teach car mechanics part time at the local college

Ambitions
. I would like to become a senior engineer (whatever grade) in X years time. To achieve this I am studying for X qualification part time.

Now I wonder if any of you can tell I am not an engineer but do you get the gist?

I think they are asking for a summary of YOU. Many CV's will not give them that. Keep your CV (in this case) factual about your education and the tasks you have done in the jobs you have had. Use this extra sheet to tell them who you are and what you can do. It is a blessing as you can really go to town and convince them you are the person for the job here. I have popped a few other pointers in this thread here
