Been thinking for a while about doing some freelance IT consultancy, but not on a full-time contracting basis, just assisting smaller companies, startups or even "people with good ideas" with their IT requirements.

For example; starting with the very basics, such as buying and setting up PCs, network/Internet access, then moving onto getting a website built, and then more sophisticated things such as online ordering and perhaps assisting with recruitment of IT personnel and planning for the future.

As such I would be taking more interest in the company than a simple 'ad-in-the-paper PC repairer' type, perhaps committing to one day a week or more to a smaller number of companies.

You can get companies to do outsourced sales, "virtual" financial directors etc - just wondering if this would work as well! Comments?

Yes this does work, we know a few companies that do this in the Cambridge area with varying degrees of success.

I think the key is to try to get a couple of decent long term contracts for a set amount per week/month (sounds obvious I know) which will pay the bills then get other more lucrative short term stuff.

Sounds similar to oursourced IT. Covering all those bases on your own might be tricky but if you can why not?
