I've just been asked if I can supply an integrated vehicle tracking system to a local business with a fleet of 20 vans.
They need to plan the route, know where the vans are and allow people (the end customer) sign for the goods. A bit like most of the delivery we get here.
I also think they need to be able to communicate with the system from head office, ie drop and extra one of those off there..

Any ideas?

David,

Generally the vehicle tracking and the parcel 'sign off' are two seperate systems. The vehicle tracking system is usually GPRS/GPS - I can put you in touch with a friend who works for a tracking company. Can't help on the parcel tracking though.

Cheers

My company can help with both. There's a bit of info regarding traffic management systems and supply chain management in the solutions section on our website:

www.thebarcodewarehouse.co.uk

Basically the POD (sign-on-screen)system and the communications with head office would all work using a rugged mobile computer with GPRS. The route planning/tracking aspect would be handled by a 'black box' with GPS and various other sensors. You do mention the company havin vans...generally these GPS 'black box' style systems are installed in lorries due to the cost. You'll notice most couriers make do with just a mobile computer. All are linked via software which can be configured to suit the needs of the clients project.

If you need any further info just let me know

toad plc might do that sort of thing for commercial vehicles.
