Im thinking of starting a loan shark business I currently have £100,000 in disposable income and fed up with poor stockmarket returns. Has anyone explored this avenue? Where is the best place to hire a couple of heavies? My customer base would initially derive from two local council estates, mainly one parent families and long term unemployed. Is there any literature available on this kind of business startup?

I suggest you Read 'Life in Jail' and 'how to become someones bitch'

As you will undoubtedly need this info if you persue this avenue.

I am assuming/hoping the tounge is firmly planted into cheek here!

I have a few clients who set up us Mortgage Repackagers for the sub-prime market which as far as I can make out, is not that far removed from your suggestion but with an air of respectability about it.

Another £150k and you could set up as a Tick-Tac man at the races - again, similar line with a degree of respect!

Whoops! just remembered I wrote that after several bottles of wine over Sunday lunch. Seemed a good idea at the time.

I believe there is money to be made there, but personally it would depress me, much better taking money off rich people

Have you tried your local Business Link? You may even qualify for a DTi grant to help you on your way to riches...
