Can anyone help?
I am currently working in a dead-end IT job for a well known, but uber-$hite engineering company. I would like to move over to the finance sector, of IT, but don't have a clue how i go about it. First of all i have no finance experiance and second of all i have no finance knowledge. But as i am working in IT everything should be somewhat the same as my current company, all thats different would be makes and models of servers and workstation.
Can anyone give me some pointers as to how i switch from one postion to another? I need to get out of this soul ucking job.

Thanks

D3

Just a matter of looking for an opening to move sideways. I did it years back, moving from various small software houses into finance via a fund management company looking for particular technical skills. Their technical requirements outweighed the need for business knowledge and I was in.

From there I picked up the business knowledge and had all boxes ticked for the next job move. Well, that was the theory.

Any particular area of finance you fancy?

I did debt, which whilst interesting at times was insanely boring mostly.

As Ted says its a case of being portable on your skills, if you have a skill widely used in finance, like COBOL for example then its going to be easier to get in.

I'm trying to break into the financial sector at the moment. I've got 9 years C++ development experience, COM, SQL, multi-threading, OOA/D, UML, XML, in fact all the skills that the financial places ask for in their JobServe adverts.

However, I too have no financial experience and unfortunately there are plenty of guys out there who have all my skills AND financial experience, so they're getting the contracts in preference.

I fear that at the moment, the laws of supply and demand are working against us. Once the market improves and all the guys with the experience are in contract then the way might be opened for us, but until then I'm not sure how one breaks into the market.

If you find out, do let me know.

The finance sector I found to be particularly ageist when I was in it. Mind you I aged about ten years during my stretch

You could not pick a more depressed market at the moment.

Don't hold your breath, there are probably 10 candidates with 5 years + experience in Finance with all the technical skills going for every job you will apply for.

Don't give up if it is what you really want to do, but because the market is so client driven currently companies can pick and choose to an extent.

Correct.. If I were you this is not a move I would make thats for sure. I'm an Operations manager for a Financial Application Service Provider, and our market has been through a real hard time over the last two years.

Well i have pretty much started getting my name and CV registered with the agents that can/could get my a better job. To be honest any finance company that is earning x amount of pounds in profit per year is better than working for a "not-for-profit-so-we-don't-have-to-pay-you" company
