Wouldn't most sales people have cold calling experience?

But then it depends on whether what you are trying to achieve is "telemarketing" where you are calling basically everyone trying to sell something.

If you have a set defined list of groomed and vetted people you are going to call, then any good sales person should be able to handle it. If you have identified a need in a company, then as long as the sales person is good they should be able to show the benfits of your services to that company.

I'm assuming this is for your recruitment company? In that case just get someone who can blag their way in and out of anything

Edited to say: Just realised my post will be of no use to Offer good OTE and you'll be able to get anyone picking up that phone, cold calling anyone!

I can't believe how hard it is to get a salesperson - most seem to have inbound sales experience (ie call centre) but bugger all outbound.

Not for Recruitment, something else!

But on a serious note. I have always belived cold calling to be the least effective way of selling something. Best practice is that the call is only used as an opportunity to get a face-to-face meeting. People buy on an emotional level, and can feel quite threatened and on the spot when it comes to cold calling. One good tactic is Write-Call-Meet. The letter at least prepares them for the call so they have an understanding of what you are talking about.

Additional: I'm not being sexist or anything but if you are going to cold call, women do it much better then men. I can't count the number of times I've been called by telesales people, but whenever it's been a woman I've always been more receptive.

Chris,

You work in Recruitment and can't find sales people with phone-sales experience, I can't believe that? I hope you don't work in sales recruitment

Evening standard on a Thursday is the best place to advertise that sort of role.

I do work in sales recruitment, if you don't mind paying a fee I will find you very good telesales people no problem at all.

I don't actually work in recruitment anymore! (that sort of died a death due to lack of effort on my behalf and the general state of the IT industry!).

Thanks for the tips all - if I am driving a Murcielago at the next PH meet it has worked out well!!!!

A lot of people who do telesales are inbound online. they just answer the phone. these idiots that are in a building going through a scrpt. i know i was on of em when i was a student. LOL

Bu seriously have you got in touch with local Recruitment agencies they usually have a long list of people who have got experience. How many people would you like to do the cold calling.

If you are advertising in the local paper get people with more than 6 months experience, if you only need a handful 5 or 6 bods then train them yourself for a week. where you have writen the scrpt etc so they cannot go off from that.

Also have some friends in the cold calling list so that you can ask you friends which caller your employee was not doing there job properly, so if they are giving your company a bad Rep you can Sack em on grounds of misconduct.

Or if you have got the money Approach a specialist in the market companys like Manpower, Sitel, etc they should give a grade A service but at a premium.

There me 2 pence worth hope it helps.

I cant offer any thing in the way of telesales people but i can setup a database of response for your telephonists to use while in a call, with the scrpt on screen and the telephonists logs all of he responses. so that you can have a database of people who except the service and people who have gone mad down the phone to you and not to call again.

cheers steve

Using scrpts!!!! Classic approach by someone who knows nothing about selling. You can tell a scrpt- reader within 5 seconds - sale lost!
