Hi Folks

I am a maths tutor and want to make videos on topics which students find most difficult.

In the videos, I only want to show my pen, the question and workings out, plus my voice stating how to resolve the question.

Can someone kindly suggest the type of software that I should use? Can this be done at home or would I need the services of a 'professional' ?

Thanks in advance.

Suggest buying a small tripod for phones plenty on eBay or Amazon. Find a good position for it so that you have a good angle on your paper. A lamp will boost the quality of the recording as better light means less compensating.

Film in 1080p if your videos are long - my phone for example has 4k recording but if you upload one continuous shot with you talking then upload to instagram it may pixelate and play in low quality if someone has less than great signal.

If you want to add your voice afterwards or cut the videos shorter etc I recommend the app ‘light cut’ on your phone. It’s intuitive to use. You can then export the video in 1080p and to specific sizes for social media. I recommend filming in portrait for anything other than YouTube.

You definitely don’t need the help of a professional just give it a go!

I’d recommend investing in some sound and lighting kit. Doesn’t need to be expensive but will make your presentation a lot more polished and professional looking.

In your case the content is obviously the single most important thing but you are more likely to get an audience if it also looks and sounds good.

You could literally do this on PowerPoint and upload it. Wouldn’t look that professional.

Does your school teach media studies? Would they like a real life project.

After a rummage about for software I have recently installed Davinci Resolve (free) and OBS Studio (free).
Lots of Youtube content on these and supposedly very powerful bits of kit - worth having a look at those.

The way I'd do this is to buy a stylus pen for the iPad / Tablet and write out your calculations whilst at the same time activating the screen record function.

That will also pick up your voice.

Students will see the formation of the calculation as it's written but unencumbered by your hand and pen.

The output is a .mov file that can go straight to You Tube. No need for any editing software unless you want to do some fancy intros and outros.

ETA: If you did want to do more of this and really got into the process, you need Final Cut Pro rather than Davinci Resolve. Both do the same thing but Final Cut has the advantage of a vast eco-system of third-party plug ins; tools that make life easier including many that are made for tutorial creation. I'm currently making a three-hour tutorial on Landfill Design for the UN using this approach. Makes the visuals look more appealing and easy to follow. If you've not edited video before, the learning curve can be a bit steep but you can start with iMovie which is native to all Mac devices. Final Cut Pro is the pro-version of this.

Just to add to this as someone who has had to do similar in the past I would add a mic that plugs into the iPad for this just so your voice comes through better. A simple lapel mic that will improve the audio for very little cost should be fine. Also buy one of the cheap Apple pencils they work just as well and add a knock off paperlight screen protector as it will make the iPad feel more natural to write on (I have one of these, really does feel like you are scribbling on paper https://amzn.eu/d/9fTaVM1 )

Try using ChatGPT and CapCut and you’ll be surprised how easy and professional it is. Won’t be as good as paying a real professional but it’s not bad.
