A friend of mine is towing an 8m power boat (value £35k), which is owned by my UK company from the UK to Greece, but I'm having problems with insurance. The boat's own insurance won't cover it whilst being transported. The guy whose taking it, vehicle insurance will cover the trailer but not the boat.

So I'm looking for a policy to cover the boat for damage / theft whilst being transported. Any ideas? I have contacted a few "goods in transit" type of insurance companies, but because he isn't an official haulage / courier they are unable to assist.

Thanks

I recently changed boats and had to transport the new one from Portland to Essex.

My insurance company asked me if I wanted them to cover the boat during transport (it was covered by the haulage company). However, the fact that they offered it, perhaps is worth asking them? https://www.gjwdirect.com/

Is he just a very nice friend, who is seemingly going to burn hundreds of £ of fuel as a favour, or are you actually paying for him to transport it?

I am very surprised, if it is the latter and he has the appropriate GIT (Goods In Transit) insurance, if he doesn't at least have a limit and the option to increase that limit.

If its the former then you're looking at the market for temporary additional insurance, I have no real insight but a good place to start would be the likes of tempcover.com or dayinsure.com

Absolute minefield.

If he is being paid to do it, then his vehicle insurance needs to be on a hire and reward basis for starters. If he isn’t being paid then you are ok.

However, most cargo/transit policies are on an annual basis. Get getting single trip is tough, and the insurers would expect the carrier to have cover up to the current limit is of the abroad Haulage Association.

What you need to be searching for is “single trip marine transit/cargo insurance”

Not one for us as, we only offer annual. But hopefully this points you in the right direction

Thank you for the replies. He is doing it as a favour for me (and also transporting some of his own personal possessions down to Greece at the same time in his van). So, he isn't being paid. I will pick up the fuel/ferry costs though.

I shall have a look at the options given - thank you.
