We are a relatively small business but make between 50 and 100 payments weekly. The current process is I receive an excel from admin and I make the payments from the Santander app.

My question is, is there a more automated pay of doing this? Ie I could upload the spreadsheet to a system and payments are made automatically?

Ask about your banks commercial banking product, these platforms normally have much better reporting and payment automation api. The banks barrier to entry is turnover amount x million normally, if you don't meet the criteria you can get past that by speaking with them and telling them you will grow to the turnover threshold in the next year or so.

We had (I've just retired) our book-keeping lady set the payments up on HSBCnet and then all one of the directors has to do is authorise them in an App.

If it was me, I'd cross-check them against the report the book-keeper emailed with the authorisation request but I was the only director who did that - I've seen the others just select all and release them without checking. To be fair, we were generally paying the same people the same sort of amounts each time. I'd only query it if the amount was unusual.

You can make multiple payments directly from a TXT file into Santander via the website.

My payroll software dumps the weekly payroll run into a TXT file. I login to my Santander business account and upload the file. Voila all payments scheduled in a click.

The format is fairly easy to understand so could easy be transposed from an XL file
