Has anybody bought stuff paying in local currency overseas on UK debit card?
How much would you be charged roughly from GBP to aud?

Can't give you a debit card example as my other half was using her debit card for payments but I used my Amex in Aus last month, £0.25 non sterling transaction fee and exchange rate of 1.9553 GBP AUD.

Would vary depending on card issuer

Not AUD, but I was recently in Spain and was offered the choice of EUR or GBP on the card terminals when paying, with the amount for each shown. I made a mental note of the amount I'd be charged if I paid in GBP, and then chose the EUR option. Without exception, it was significantly cheaper to pay in local currency, when the Starling app pinged a moment later with the actual transaction amount. Typically a pound or so's difference even when buying E20's worth of stuff in the supermarket. Checking out the hotel and clearing out the bar bill etc, the difference was more like £20 saved by paying in Euros.

Does depend on your card issuer though. I was paying with a Starling debit Mastercard, which has no transaction fees and uses just the Mastercard exchange rate. Other card issuers may vary.

Eh? Pretty much any proper UK bank can arrange a foreign payment anywhere in the world as long as you have the foreign banks Swift/BIC code and the customers account number.
