My Corporation Tax Return was filed on 30/05/2024, and the emailed acceptance received. I am owed £4,000.

I looked at my Government Gateway this morning to see if the refund was progressing and it's not even showing as the Return filed. The portal to do so is still active.

Is this normal in this day and age with the delightful HMRC?

I presume you have filed this yourself and not via an accountant? I'm not familiar with a company's own portal for corporation tax, but our agent portal will always show the filing has been received. However it may then have to go through security/review in a small number of cases.

Unfortunately you're going to have to call HRMC and find out what's happening.

Thanks.

The accountant filed it and he forwarded the email confirmation he received.

Oh ok. He'll need to chase them then, otherwise these things can drag on for months (years).

Sounds odd to me. Why is there any email involved? I thought accountants filed these things electronically and got an immediate numbered receipt.

I may be using the wrong terminology. He emailed me a copy of the HMRC Submission Receipt showing status as Accepted. I assumed he got that via email, but maybe not.

Have you been sent a full printout of the return and, in particular, tax calculation? Check all names and identification numbers tie up exactly.

Since you're saying you can login to check status are you sure you're logging in the same way as the accountant? Otherwise things may simply not be matching up.

Ok, so that is an agent software submission then as normal. Ask him what his agent portal is showing for the refund. Either way it needs chasing up.

You would think that if the Return has been filed then the ability to do so on my Government Gateway would be disabled. However, it comes as no great surprise that the two systems don't link up.

All entities have the ability to access their tax information irrespective of how the returns/information was submitted. However as you suggest, HMRC's system are so st, the chances of that data being late/wrong etc is quite high biggrin

They owed me £16k for almost 2 years! They are a nightmare when trying to get them to pay you.

You pray every night before bed to the God of HMRC and hope that he smiles upon you.

I feel like I must have a different HMRC sometimes. Have you tried calling them?

I double paid one year, and called up, the guy seemed very capable and had the authority to refund me the cash within a couple of days.

Different situation I know but every time I've called they've always been keen to help.

An obvious overpayment is very different from a refund to be honest. Corporation tax is one of the 'least worst' departments and will try to help you if they can.

My accountant got through to HMRC and they confirmed the Return had been received and processes. The refund has been approved.

They couldn't explain why the portal to file the Tax Return on my Government Gateway was still active.

You can obtain a CT refund if you make use of allowable losses.
