A neighbour of ours has just had some letters through from Companies House stating that someone has formed a company at their address, without their knowledge or consent.

Obviously, this is causing them some distress as they don’t know what to do about it, what the implications for them are or who to talk to. Action Fraud and CAB have been useless so far.

I was wondering if the experts on here could help with a few questions:
What is the fraudster trying to achieve?
How do my neighbours stop that?
Can they get the company closed down?
Who do they need to talk to to get some help?
Has anyone been through this? Successfully?

Any help is gratefully accepted at the moment.

They have but they are still in the waiting period for an official response.

Their main worries are that they don't want the address blacklisted for credit in the future and they don't want someone stealing their house...

If they are worried about they should contact the Land Registry who offer an "Alerts" service whereby you are automatically notified of any activity in relation to your property title. There is no charge for the service. apply on the link below,

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/property-alert

The BBC covered this issue on Watchdog as part of The One Show.

We are sorry to hear about the difficulties people in Swansea are experiencing. We understand the impact this can have and are contacting those affected to help them resolve the issue.

From this spring, we will have greater powers to query and remove fraudulent information from the companies register and will prioritise cases where people’s names and addresses have been used without their consent.

We plan to do more checks to determine the accuracy of information which is delivered before it is placed on the register.

These include requiring company directors and people who file information to verify their identity to ensure they are who they say they are.

These changes will enable us to crack down on the use of false addresses and other misuse of the register.

Typical civil service complacency. This issue has been going on for years.

They claim they have no powers to do anything about it, but it is fraud, plain and simple. They can report it to the police and they can suspend the registration until it is sorted out, but they cannot be bothered, no matter who it impacts. Several MPs have been targeted and they have had as little luck as the man in the street getting it sorted.

Google Graham Barrow and Risk Alert 247 LTD.

He’s been on a crusade (rightly so) about the failings of Companies House.

His sites will offer help also.
