Hi, Had a spot check HSE visit to my cabinet making business.
No issues.
Said they would get back to me in 10 days, 65 days later they have come back to me saying I need to set up health surveillance on my employees, only 3 of them plus me.
The extraction system I have is complete over kill, suck you off from 20 ft etc etc................... smile

Do I really need to do this, the daft thing is when he left he had agreed it wasn't necessary, now 60 days later he's forgotten that conversation and starting back at the beginning.

everyone has the best PPE, face masks FF3, air fed masks, clothing, googles, gloves footwear etc.

Just seems like another nail in the coffin for small business.

The workshop is kept very very clean, no sweeping, all vacuumed etc etc.

It really depends on what hazardous substances you are using, what do your COSHH assessments say??

Did the HSE say anything about any improvement notices or FFI ?

I hate to say it, but I’d employ an H&S consultant and let them deal with your due diligence.
I have no experience of your business though.

So the guy has taken so long to respond since visit, 65 days.
No improvement notices, clean bill of health but nothing in writing as soooo slow.
I think he has forgotten half the stuff discussed.

We are just undertaking our usual 42 sets of health surveillance. We do it every year.

If you have spray systems look at Lung Assessments and Skin Assessments. We are in the woodworking industry too so look also at Hearing Tests, Hand Arm Vibration Tests and MSK Assessments.

Google a local qualified Assessor.

We also do Drivers and Forklift Drivers every 3 years.

This costs us circa £1,800 pa. It has reduced our insurance bill by a lot more. More importantly, our employees appreciate the free MOT.

Also make sure your sprayers are Face Fit tested every 2 years. Cheap as chips.

You seem clued up on PPE. Well done and good luck.
