Any advice appreciated!

We are setting up a business for my wife

We need to create a website, logo etc.

Are there any good free logo makers (that are genuinely free)? Or best to go on somewhere like fiverr.com to have it done professionally?

It's a really simple logo we need but want to ensure we are own it outright so no copyright issues etc.

With regards to the website, we have the domain registered and have paid for Wordpress but struggling to use their system to build the site - any suggestions.

Willing to spend some money on it (hundreds not thousands!) if required.

My company creates Wordpress websites. A number for PHers too.
If you would like to send me an email through Pistonheads we can discuss if we can work with your budget… really depends what you require and how complex are your needs

I assume you're happy to pay for accounting or legal services. Why do you consider that the most important thing that's used to convey your business and shape people's opinions about it doesn't warrant proper investment?

It may be simple and there are indeed 'free' resources but what you'll get won't be unique and one day, someone will ask you for a vectorised version or png with transparent background or what the hex code is and you'll be stuck.

Find a local designer or design company. A couple of hundred quid and you'll get several to choose from and a folder of all variants that you'll need.... and professional advice should it be needed later on for other things.

Fiverr can also be of use. Choose wisely and locally.

Copyright is automatically assigned to the creator of original content. Every designer on earth automatically passes on the copyright once they've received their fee for creating it. But to avoid issues should you find the one that doesn't, make it clear that this is what you want before you assign them them to the task.

...And worth noting that a lot of the free logo creator resources retain the copyright which is only passed to you should you pay to upgrade.

Good luck with the business.

Thanks both for the replies.

We've sorted the logo via Fiverr...

More questions:

Where do I find out what information we have to provide on our website such as privacy policies/ GDPR notices etc.

Is there a resource that spells out what is required?

A couple of free options - what do your competition have in terms of terms, privacy policy etc. Another option is to ask Chat GPT, it can create some great content personalised to your sector - just make sure you read through it to ensure it all applies.

Had a good experience with 99designs.co.uk for logos.

Assuming it’s not e-commerce then look at a competitive website and work out how to improve it with your better services etc

The whole purpose of your site is to inform and create a CTA - call to action - think what you want people to do when they land on the site.

A freelancer typically wouldn’t think that deep but an agency would.

I've built a number of websites using Square Space.

It's very easy to get the hang of.

Only yesterday someone praised me on how good one of them looks.

Can add SEO on there as well.

Respectfully I think you ought to look at an alternative platform to Wordpress for your site if you are going to build it yourself.
Getting it to play nicely and be stable is easy when you have experience but is a steepish learning curve and again respectfully if you are asking the questions above you are starting at the bottom of the learning curve.
Obviously I am making assumptions here regarding your techn savy so apologies if I am wrong.

I think the real questions are what do you expect from your website....... are you expecting it to drive orders to your new business. Unless you are in a super niche then it is unlikely to happen without professional design, coding SEO etc and even then it take time using a clear strategy to start appearing up on Search engines listings.

If the website is just a "take a look at our website" suggestion to prospects/current customers then that is achievable with a home coded website.
I would not recommend Wordpress though due to the maintenance required to keep it functioning.

However I cannot stress how much more you can get out of a professional agency with a clear design and marketing strategy. ( I would say that since that is the market our Agency works in) smile

If you give us a little more information regarding what you require the site to do and your experience I am sure you will get some great unbiased information from the clever guys here.

I agree on the Wordpress platform, doesn't seem simple enough for me to use going forward. I have little to no IT skills, but have a 'have a go' then pay someone if I fail/give up attitude.

The website will be used to show the clients we exist and also to drive new business. (My wife is a Clinical Psychologist, offering private sessions)

There will be no-ecomerce.

It is only a side-gig for her for the time being, so not immediately looking to be the no.1 ranked psychologist on google from day 1, but I can see it becoming 50-60% of her work in the next 5 years.

Ok in my view that’s going to be a toughish gig to get the website ranked to a decent enough level to get a worthwhile traffic. This is due to it being a busy space on the net. One thing you have got going for you is I am assuming it’s quite a geographical based service. You might get lucky if your area is a little sparse of Trock Cyclists 😁 ….. apologies my wife worked with a load of them lot and I think their humour has transferred to me having spent time with them socially.
I love the fact that you want to give it a try. It’s actually how I started out many many years ago with a thing called Dreamweaver.

Good luck

Waiting for someone to find your website via search engine is too passive IMHO. My website was home-made and very basic, but I advertised in the right place and got a conversion rate of c.90%. It was easy to navigate and quickly showed people what they wanted to see.

Had planned on just paying google for advertising if we needed new work.

Most of her work so far has been word of mouth so primarily the website isn't to drive new business right now
