Wilko - Delays Supplier Payments
Discussion

News that Wilko is delaying supplier payments and moving from quarterly to monthly rent payments comes as a surprise to me. They have a lot of stores, but a lot of competition from the likes of Home Bargains and B&M who sell similar stuff.
To me, some of their stores seem too large and have unnecessary floor space. And I've been noticing that stock on the shelves is often bare or getting very low. When we bought stuff for Vikingette2 to start Uni, we ended up in TKMaxx as Wilko had virtually no cooking stuff available.

I'm confused. You say that news that they are delaying supplier payments and moving to monthly rental payments comes as a surprise to you, and then go on to list a whole bunch of reasons why it shouldn't come as a surprise to you. Classic signs of running out of cash. When suppliers' insurers decline coverage of credit risk on stocking invoices, the doors will shut.News that Wilko is delaying supplier payments and moving from quarterly to monthly rent payments comes as a surprise to me.
I like Wilcos - the shop Woolworths should have been
Whilst they dont have loads of lines, what they do have is usually what you need
The pick and mix screws, nuts and bolts is ace
Is worrying when you hear of the any supplier issues
I would imagine lots go in , have a gander and then get it delivered for peanuts from Amazon

I usually go in to get the bags to pick up the dog eggs and being lazy usually end up buying more stuff from there rather than go into a supermarket, but like others have said the shelves are usually bare, I used to get one of the baskets full now its 2-3 items, if they had more I would buy more, they must be losing £20 a month of sales from just me, replicate that across a load of people and its a death spiral.

And it looks like it may end up going the same way as Woolworths. I used to buy quite a lot of things from Wilko and having just thought about it I cannot remember the last time I actually bought anything from there.I would say they have a lot of competition from Pound Stretcher, B&M and the Range and to be honest all of those stores are doing it better.
I think Wilko might be in serious trouble.

Same, I used to go in most Saturdays for something and would come out with another 20 items which I hadn't realised I needed. However for years now stock levels have been going down and down with more and more empty shelves in their stores and I haven't bought anything in Wilkos for months now. Had a pointless visit to my local Wilko today. Website claimed it had 20+ packets of some dogs chews I wanted, got there to find the shelf bare. Staff checked their system which said they should have 80 packets, after they spent 10 minutes in their stockroom they found nothing.
They seem to be in a right mess and my dog isn't going to be happy as they were his favourites!

Popped into Wilko yesterday to pick up a few cleaning products. I swear you could compress/condense the stock on the shelves into a store 1/3 of the size!
I remember a month ago, I went into Wilko with Vikingette2 to pick up stuff for her for university. We ended up shopping in TKMaxx and Tesco/Sainsburys because there were no saucepans, no cooking utensils, and anything you wanted for a student wasn't on the shelf. I can't help feeling they've lost a humongous chunk of sales with no stock.

Wilko seem to have more town centre/high street stores than the likes of B&M, The Range, Home Bargains etc which are in more popular out of town retail warehouse type locations. I think this will be Wilko's downfall. Reduced footfall from high street retail decline, fewer office workers popping out for a few bits in their lunch break because they are now working from home...
Yes, I would guess that the number of city/town centre stores is a root problem. A lot of competition out there nowadays, but generally out of town. Also too many empty shelves.
