CPC advertising
Discussion
I use it as the major driver in my marketing campaign, selling B2B software.
Google Adwords is the largest by a mile, Overture (or Yahoo Search Marketing as it recently got re-branded) is second. The rest aren't really worth it unless you have excess time/money.
- Start small and experiment until you work it out. It is easy to get carried away and clicks can mount up quickly
- Do not bid on generic terms such as 'car', but if you must then bid low. More specific terms such as 'new car reviews' would bring a better click-through-rate and more targetted visitor
The amount to pay per click depends on the industry and the keyword, so there isn't a right or wrong amount, so long as you are seeing good ROI. I have a few thousand keywords and spend 5 pence for some and £2 for others.
Could you go into more detail about what you are looing to do? What are you promoting in PH exactly?

Ahh, ignore my ramblings then, not my area.

I aim to try and pay around 19p per click by targetting a visitor that is looking for my specific product, in a specific location - this way you can pull in the right audience and not end up paying 3-4 quid per click for surfers who aren't interested.
Just had a brainstorm
How about when a user posts or replies the site can serve up an advert based on the subject they're writing about actually underneath what they have written.
Something like:
My Tuscan engine died last night....
Having trouble with your S6 engine? why not try....
Advertisers might be interested in that one.

It does already, although just for banner ads, based on a keyword match.
I'm trying to work out how I could introduce PPC in a manner that fits well with existing ads and how to determine a pricing structure.
We have also looked at doing this for our site and decided that a click through conversion ratio model worked a lot better then just the highest ppc.
Basically you need vendors to specify an amount per keyword for each click, you also need to have a limit that they won't be taken over (when they reach the click limit per day the ad doesn't appear)
If you create a click through/impression ratio and use this to 'weight' the max amount per click you can sort results so most profitable are more prominant.
One thing also to consider is management of payments, these will usually be quite low cost so you might want to think about aggregating their weekly limits to a monthly charge, or consider using some kind of 'prepay' model where users can buy ppc 'deals' which are packaged up in set prices.
We thought the best way to introduce the textual link into the forums was on a thread level (not post level) with a 'Thread sponsored by xyz co - the best widgets in the world, at the cheapest prices..' just under the first post in the thread.
You can then add on a few more thread sponsors as people post, but limit it at around 3 (so the first thread gets the most profitable related ppc advertiser, the 2nd thread gets the 2nd most profitable etc)
The good thing about using textual adverts is that people can't block them like many people will do with the annoying banner adverts and post adverts.
If you want to mail me off the board to discuss this more please feel free to do so.
