During 2004 - 2005 i had three employments, two of which were with the same employer. I went from Employer A to Employer B and the back to Employer A.

As a result of this my two employments with A are termed as Associated Employments when it comes to things such as mileage allowance relief etc.

I am required to complete three SA101's and need to know how / where I enter the details for the Associated Employments for the MAR claim. I will have covered more than 10,000 miles for Employer A when the two individual amounts are added together. Does this get entered into box 1.32 for the first stint or the second stint with Employer A? and if so how do I confirm that this is what has been done?

Thanks

Richard.

As far as I know, the 10,000 mile limit on business mileage is a total for YOU (not each employment). Therefore if your combined mileage for all three jobs is higher than 10,000 (as it appears to be) you must restrict your claim.

It is not clear from your posting what the actual mileage allowance you received from the various employers was. If they were paying you 40p per mile (up to 10,000 miles) and 25p thereafter, then you cannot make any additional claims on your tax return.

If they paid you more than 40p per mile or even more than 25p per mile after the 10,000 limit had been ecceeded, you may actually have to declare the excess as a Benefit in Kind.

Obviously, if you were paid at LESS than the 40p or 25p rates, you can claim the difference as an additional allowance claim on your Self SAssessment tax return.

Eric,

Box 1.32 appears in each of the SA101 forms, for details of the business expenses etc. implying that you do it for each employment. However there is a separate ruling that if you have been employed by the same employer more than once in the same year then they become Associated, and the totals are then to be made cumulative for that employer. What it doesn't say is how you actually go about entering those details.

I do about 25,000 business miles a year and make the same type of MAR claim each year, so understand the pence per mile scenario, but this is the first time that I have changed employments in the way described.

Are you making additional claims because your employers have paid you at less than the maximum permissable rates?

Yes, I am. I will be applying for the MAR based upon the stepped rates of 40 & 25 pence, less the rates paid by the two employers.

With associated employers, I would expect that they leave it up to you to make the split whichever way you see fit. If the combined mileage between the two periods of employment with the same employer come to 25,000, then allcocate the 10,000 mile limit to the first period of emplyment and, if there is a balance left of that 10,000 miles, bring that balance into the seconmd period of employment. Everything beyonf 10,000 miles (i.e 10,000 to 25,000) would apply to the second period.

Nice one,

I can presumably explain this with some words in the general comments box.

Cheers Eric.

Yes - that might be a good idea too.
