How would you approach this ? Our department has been whittled down from 6 people doing a Saturday rota to 3.

I’ve had a weeks holiday booked now for since January and the boss has rotad me to work the Saturday before my holiday.

Now a few weeks ago I told him that I was going away on the Saturday. I suppose he just forgot.

The thing is he’s one of these types that will go immediately on the defensive when I point out to him that I will not be available to work.

He will either say swap it ( no one else is available as there are only 3 on the rota ) or that the week runs Monday to Saturday not Monday to Friday …….

When you booked the holiday I am assuming that you notified him that you were going away for a week, i.e. leave work on Friday of the first weekend, return Monday after the second weekend.

If so, then it's unfortunate that he has made a mistake.

Ultimately he is the boss. It isn't your job to get your co-workers to swap with you. You need him to lay down the law. Or do you? When one of your co-workers comes to you and asks for a favour and to swap do you want to tell them that you're busy? You might.

I always send a copy of my holiday schedule to my co-workers so they can't get me involved in anything while I intend to be away.

It may be too late for this, but I would try persuasion with the co-workers, or make it a point of discussion in your next meeting.

I'd also think about what would happen if one of you was sick. Who would cover? Somebody would have to.

Thinking as I type, if your co-workers and boss are unccoperative I'd do the time you have to, then pay them back with some sickness at the next Saturday, and go out of the area every weekend on point of principle for the next year.

If they can't be flexible you shouldn't be either.
