Hi,
I'm interested in applying for a job with Thomson Financial in the city within their client relationship management area. Does anyone have any experience/knowledge or dealings of this company? What they're like to work for etc.

I think it's the same company that I used to buy a product called "Dialog" from - although I may be wrong. Anyway, they treated me pretty badly as a customer, I think. Unlike their competitors, they wouldn't send someone out to train my staff - I've got about a dozen in that particular department. Which is crazy, because the more the staff would use the product, the more they'd be able to charge us. Anyway, customer service may well be an area that you could make a lot of difference to the company.

I worked there (as a development team leader) for 3 years from May 2000. The first year was good, but then Thomson seemed to lose interest in our business area, people started leaving, morale hit rock bottom, they tried to sell our department, failed, and made 90% of us redundant (after saying they wouldn't).

Do you know which Thomson products you would be working with? Got any names?

Alex/Screbbe,
Thanks ever so much for your replies.
I don't have a lot of info at the moment, I'm only considering an application following an ad in the Standard. The basic description is;
*Client Relationship Management team, working alongside your counterparts in sales to grow existing revenue and identify potential new business opportunities. You will work on building a proactive partnership with key contacts at your accounts. This includes ensuring clients are maximising their use of Thomson Financial services, for example through customisation and training. Financial market knowledge and experience of working in a face to face customer contact role are essential. A finance-related degree is desirable.*

It's a company I've not really heard of and the website can only tell me so much. I've worked for companies with no morale etc before (Statestreet) and have no desire to work for a similar company again.

Thomson are no. 3 in the financial data market, behind Reuters and Bloomberg. The name is not as well known, but I guarantee that whenever you see a share price or exchange rate graph in a newspaper, it will be from Thomson Datastream.

During my time there, Thomson acquired a rival, Primark, yet gave all the management positions to ex-Primark staff. That's when people started to get really ped off!

I work with someone who has worked at Thomson Financial (left there to come here) I'll ask him to type me a paragraph or two and I'll mail it to you.

As I type actually - he has two Thomson relationship managers sitting with him! I'll get him to give me an indication of how he perceived them (I can tell you that they're both hotties though! )

We also use a Thomson product (Portia - a portfolio management tool) and I know the general perception is that Thomson don't know their ae from their elbow. Also, things don't often get done/sorted out. Generally not a good public opinion of them. I would guess that moral will be low there (from what I've picked up).

Cheers,
Phil.

PORTIA was the product I worked on. Thomson allegedly tried to sell it, allegedly failed, then made redundancies.
