Anybody tried it?

I registred a few months ago and uploaded all my staff details, company cars etc.

As I am on holiday in April and busy when I get back I thought that since we have already had our last pay day of the 2004/5 year I would do my returns. Not that easy.

Having navigated the systems and been rejected at every turn I realised that I was in fact creating P11's for 2005/6. I finally made my way to the annual returns, input data for the majority of people but then had one person rejected because of a wrong code. Then the penny dropped: I was doing a return for 2003/4 (which I did on paper last year anyway)!

I rang the 'help' line who tell me that you can't do a 2004/5 return until April 6th, at which point they expect the server to be very, very busy ( can I hear a crash coming?).

I have put time in my diary to do it during the wee small hours, but be warned,if you want to return online and get your £250 make sure you are registered now and don't have to make a return in that week after April 6th. If you register for online completion they don't send you the end of year paper forms.

Oh, and BTW when the form asks for the 'employee tax reference' it sems they are after their tax code. I scoured all the paperwork I had looking for some unique number and inputing various spurious numbers I found, but they were all rejected. In the end I input the tax code and it worked (well sort of, until I realsied it was the wrong year).

To clarify matters for other readers, you are referring to the 2004/05 Empoyer's Annual Return Form P35 and P14s/P60s etc.

Just to remind you of the relevant deadlines - the P35 has to be submitted by 19 May 2005 and the Benefit in Kind returns (P11d and P11d(b) has a 6 July 2005 deadline.

Expect lots of problems. Also, ensure that you keep detailed PAPER records of all your submissions - not just the backup summaries themselves but a copy of the actual details entered on the forms.
You still need to generate PAPER P60s for each and every one of your employees plus the directors of the company if appropriate. You also need to provide PAPER P11d details to your employees.

Has anyone had any success yet with the Inland Revenue website?

I was notified of 'Government Mail' in my inbox on 1st April and am still unable to access it. The helpline told me middle of last week that the secure mailbox would be closed for maintenance until 8th April, but it's still down.

Also got halfway through inputing info for the P14s early this morning when the site locked up. Since then everytime I try to login, either I get a System Busy message, or manage to log in and get as far as the PAYE online section and then get the "Error : TICKETBOOK_EXPIRED". The, er, 'charming' gentleman on the helpline tells me in very limited English that the site's not coping with the demand! He also said he had no idea if the pages of data I had already input would be saved or not....

Ah well, I'll give it another go late tonight..

Now doing this myself.

Sole director, not paid as such.

Do I either.

1. State no employees

2. State myself as an employee but earning zero

Cheers

The P35 only has boxes for the PAYE and NI calculated on salaries, therefore there is no requirement to enter the actual salary itself. If you paid yourself no salary, just enter your name (as director - marked with as asterisk, of course) and enter "Nil" in the PAYE and NI columns and also enter "Nil" in the boxes where you are supposed to enter the various Totals and Sub-Totals.

Make sure that you tick all the appropriate boxes on Page 4 of the P35 too.

If you paid yourself expenses or had any sort of Benefit in Kind from the company, you will need to submit a P11d by 6 July 2005. If this is the case, you can either submit the completed P11d and the related declaration form P11d(b)now along with the P35 and tick the "are enclosed" box on the P35. Otherwise you can tick the "will be sent later" box on the P35. If no P11ds are required, tick the "are not due" box on the P11d - but only if you are absolutely sure that a P11d really is not due.

An incorrect declaration in respect of P11ds could result in a fine of up to £3,000.

I did it all quite easily in the end. Waited until a Friday evening, no problems accesing. I think the dificult bit is registering and inputting employee details. Actally doing the EOY returns was quite easy once I had the hang of it (like the little leter p which means you have to give the pence as wel as the pounds). For people like me with 3 employees, easiest £250 you will earn if you can get past the registration hurdle.

Pity you can't do P60's from the data you input.
