credit card recall on payments?
Discussion
hi there,
i was wondering if anyone could help with an ebay situation that has arisen. i listed a Dior necklace on a Buy It Now for £50, with payment options as cheque or postal orders only, as i only have a personal account and cannot accept credit card payments. the buyer completed the buy it now option and THEN asked if i would accept paypal, i said yes as i assumed she would pay by switch/debit card, and sent an invoice via ebay.
basically, the buyer has now sent me a payment, which i am yet to accept, of £54 via credit card, on what she says is her mums account/credit card. it all seems a little dodgy as she is adamant that she cannot pay any other way as it is a present for her mum. i cannot accept this payment without upgrading my account, which i am prepared to do, but i am very wary of the genuineness of the case.
what id really like to know is how long is it before a credit card company can either be instructed to or just withdraw a payment? if the buyer is prepared to wait however long this is, then i will continue the transaction and send the goods as soon as i know the paymenthas safely cleared. needless to say i dont want to be left without my money or the neckalce that i know i could get more for.
any suggestions and advice would be greatly apprecited!
many thanks
claire

With Paypal I think it's 60 days (believe it used to be 90 days)
If you smell a rat trust your instincts and do a Paypal refund. Make up an excuse why you can't accept it and see if they will cough up via another method or just move on, do an ebay UIP process saying the buyer wouldn't pay by your accepted payment methods, this will get your fees back and you will be able to re-list for free.
Cheers, John
BTW can someone confirm, was looking at Worldpay and I read something along they lines that customers can charge back anything upto 555 days from day of purchase Is that right!!

They broke your terms of sale, either wittingly or unwittingly. If you upgrade your account to accept it, you will have to pay extra fees.
I would send them a nice e-mail explaining the problem and that as a result you wish to return the payment and ask for a bank transfer or cheque instead. Just keep it friendly and humane

It does depend on what you are selling. Usually it is 6 months after the transaction is completed. This can be extended in some circumstances eg. if you are providing an ongoing service or subscription, in which case the right to charge the transaction back lasts until the service is completed.

The credit card company can take the money back for something like up to 3 months AFTER the purchase - somebody will correct me on the exact timescales no doubt...
Was a few yrs back, but I had a £500 chargeback for a Mobile Phone I sold (9200 communicator when it was brand new!) after NINE MONTHS, this was back when Billpoint was the main payment method at eBay.
that was disgusting I thought!
