Strange question, but does anyone know what business rates pay for. I am having a few problems with Westminster council, in london, at the moment concerning our waste disposal as they are trying to get more and more money out of us by hiring more bins from them. I questioned why council tax paid for residential waste collection and business rates didn't as they were essentially the same thing!

Hope someone can help!!!!

Same in most areas.

If you want someone to remove your office waste, then you need a contract with the council, or someone else, to place and empty the wheelie bins or skips.

Beats me what they do for their non-domestic rates.

You are paying a tax for the sheer cheek of running a business. It's a straight forward tax/theft. There is no element of trade ie receiving something in return.

Business rates do not pay for your waste disposal. Your business rates go directly to the government and not the council. You can use a private contractor however and probably save some money that way, don’t forget to negotiate a fair price though. I work for a large waste disposal company and we service all London. You may find that a private firm may be contracted to Westminster council for either domestic or business waste or even both, possibly Sita or Onyx.

Thanks guys! Yeah, using Onyx at the moment (Westminster contractor). It's just the cheek of all these taxes and you get sod all for it. The restaurant I work for pays close to 100k per annum in business rates and when I asked the waste collection sales b*****d what my rates covered he said street lighting! Bloody hell we must be paying for all the street lights in Westminster!
